Dressing baby for cold...

We are going to Vancouver for the olympics and I have no idea how to dress ds (8 mo). I know it sounds dumb, but what do I need? Jackets, snow suits, layers???? We live in Texas, and although it has snowed a few times this winter, it really isn't cold. I was thinking of getting some baby legs for layering, but he is reeeaally chunky, will they fit him?!?! Also, how do you cold weather mamas dress to nurse (also a dumb question). When I lived in ny I layered, but that's a pain to lift a bunch of shirts to nurse...
Anyway... Any advice from you mamas living in the cold would be much appreciated!

I follow the same general rule of thumb for dressing in all weather--one extra layer. So, for example, today it was 13 degrees out. P. was wearing tights, pants, onesie, long sleeve shirt, light cotton sweater. She has a fleece snowsuit, wool hat and wool mittens for going outside.

I was wearing jeans, nursing bra, loose tank top, long sleeved shirt. I pulled up the top shirt, and the tank top down to nurse. I'm all about doing that anyway since I'm not a fan of my tummy, but it's convenient for comfort during the cold months.

Happy trails on your trip!

Oh dear. You're coming HERE, I wish I was going THERE!

Anyhow, from one mama to another, this one living in the Olympic city, don't worry about it. I dress my 8 month old in a long-sleeved onesie and cotton pants and a zip-up hoodie and socks (and a diaper). That's IT. it's not cold here. depending on what events you are seeing, you might want a warmer jacket or something, we have the carters fleece bunting for when it's REALLY chilly out.

OH, and for you, just a spring jacket, an extra sweater for some of the events might be warranted, like hockey, speedskating, etc... in an arena or up at Whistler. The local mountains aren't cold enough for snow let alone heavy jackets.

Thanks mamas. What a relief, it sounds like I don't have to go out and buy a bunch of winter clothes for him to only use for two weeks! The only thing I might get are some tights for Ds for layering....

Probably the advice from the poster living in Canada is the best, but in any case, I'll let you know what I do in the winter here in Western Mass. For me, silk long underwear or tights layered under pants, plus boots. On top, a glamourmom tank with a long sleeved t-shirt gets layered under a button-up or zip-up sweater/fleece (so I'm really only lifting up one layer to nurse). Coat on top. For baby, I do use the babylegs (and he's super chunky but he doesn't seem to mind and I do stretch them out a little before putting them on him) and then put on Old Navy triple-roll socks (they're super long) and pull them up, pants over that. The extra layers help when his pant legs pull up when I'm carrying him. Long sleeved onesie (because top layers ride up) and sweatshirt on top. Plus a jacket. When it's super freezing, I put him in the Old Navy bunting suit, but usually not.
HTH!

I remember when I went to a family function (outdoors) in October. And normally october isn't even something to worry about but this was a dreadful day...windchill was 10 (cold here).

anyways, I layered her several times which seemed to work for about 15 minutes. By then she had purple lips and was fussy.

The real issue for her had to do with covering her hands. She disliked cold hands, but at the same time wouldn't keep mittens on. If you can find a coat or suit that has the foldover flaps I vote on using it.

Living in Maine, we definitely needed options for cold weather. My 8 month old has 2 "suits", which are one-pieces that cover her from head to toe (so they have a hood, and then the feet and hands fold over to create mittens/footies). One is fleece and one is a heavy snowsuit material. I usually put her in the fleece one (with just regular clothes underneath) unless we are going to be spending any time outside, and then I put her in the snowsuit one. They are great because they are super convenient, just zip her in and go. They are also comfy and warm. My Mom picked them up at the ll bean outlet store.

For me, I wear a jacket shell with a bit of a liner and then a sweatshirt underneath, with just a nursing tank below that (if it's very cold, a long sleeve shirt also). The jacket cuts the wind when you are out and about, and sweatshirts are baggy enough to make nursing easy when you need to do that.

Have fun at the Olympics!
