What is the real difference?

What is the real difference between a pocket diaper and using insert/booster with cover?

And how is that different from say the Flip system?

Couldn't you just lay a pocket dipe insert in a cover or am I missing a piece of the puzzle here? Is the only difference that the whole pocket dipe needs washed for every change whereas a cover can be re-used?

Help clue a newb in before I start spending money on my post-nb stash.

Hm. I guess the main points are

1) Water-repellent material in the pocket sleeve keeps baby dry, while all the pee gets sucked into the thirsty microfiber insert underneath

2) You can prestuff the pockets, unlike prefolds/covers, making the actual diaper change speedier (like a sposie or AIO)

3) You can customize the absorbency by adding extra inserts

HTH!

Btw, you can't put a microfiber insert next to baby bc it is so absorbent that it is irritating to their skin.

Ah, thanks!

Could you have a hemp insert next to baby's skin?

If your babe still has liquid poop, you can't just lie an insert inside a cover and expect to reuse the cover. You can if all you catch is pee, but every poo will require the cover to be washed.

And yes, you can put hemp next to the baby.

Is there a difference between microfiber and microfleece?

Yup! Microfiber absorbs, microfleece repels. Microfiber is used for pocket diaper inserts while microfleece is used for the stay-dry liner that touches the baby.

I prefer AI2 (like flip) over pockets because I don't like the idea of having to prestuff diapers a bunch of diapers out of the dryer before use. I like the simplicity of laying the diaper on the shell. It also takes up less room in our diaper bag.

As for Flip, we switched to that recently because my son was waking up just because he was wet at night. It has the benefits of a pocket because of the stay dry top and microfiber bottom, but the simplicity of an AI2 and takes up much less space.

With a pocket diaper, you "stuff" the insert in it. There's generally an inner layer of microfleece or suedecloth to give a sort of "stay dry" feel. The entire thing must be washed after one use. You can use microfiber in a pocket, because it won't touch baby's skin. The benefit of pockets is that they are really easy to put on. Once they are stuffed, they go on like an AIO (all in one), similar to a sposie.

With an AI2 (all in two), which is basically an insert laid in a cover, you just lay the insert in the cover. If the cover is not wet or dirty, you can reuse it with another insert. The benefit of this type of system is that the covers don't get as much wear and tear on them from washing. You can cut out some microfleece liners if you want a staydry feel. The downside of these is that they are not as easy to put on as pockets. They aren't hard to put on at all, but someone unfamiliar with the system might be confused for a minute.

You can also use the shell of pocket diapers as a "cover" if you just lay the insert on the inside. Just make sure no microfiber touches the skin. For covers that don't have wipe-clean inners, you can typically only reuse them 2-3 times though.
