PREFOLD Basics--best way to use...easiest for husbands

We have our diapers and I will begin washing today! The baby is not due until March, but I think we need a little practice...

There are soooo many types of folds out there it seems.... Does anyone have a recommendation on a good site that shows the steps of the various types of folding styles and thoughts on what the best ones are to avoid leaks at various stages (especially newborn since that's what we are starting with) and yes, what's the easiest one for husbands that are supportive but I know, could EASILY be frustrated with prefolds/cloth diapers in general? I Did order some all in ones for his use as well, but would like to stick to prefolds as our primary diaper if we can manage.......

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

The easiest for my DH is to just trifold the prefold and lay in the cover, but I don't know how that would work for a newborn. The second easiest for DH was the twist fold, which also seemed to hold in everything pretty well for DD if I rolled a little at the legs after it was on her.

this is the fold we use, but we unfold the front (so there is not so much bulk all in one place) before we snappi. my husband mastered it in about a week.

here is a great video

we do it more like this, but snappi before we put the cover on

DH aleays just trifolded her never got pins or snappi. With this one on the way (also due in March) I have some properly sized prefolds that will trifold the long ways and fit into sized covers with out issues however with my first those weren't around yet so we jst took what we had an trifolded them the "wrong" way with prefolds turned on its side he had no issues doing this.

DH and I both do the Angle Wing fold with a snappi. I can also do pins, but choose the snappi most times.

If you do the pull the leg trick then the Angle Wing has nice snug side that catch poop pretty well IME. (This video is actually a "how to pin"but she shows the pull the leg trick.)

I also like a cover with leg gussets for the times the diaper dosen't catch all the poop. I like Thirsties best, but the Bummis SuperBrite works ok too.

we started w/ just trifolding, but poop always got on the cover. It annoyed DH as much as it annoyed me, so we learned to fold & snappi. Once we were good at it (a week or 2) there were much fewer poopy covers to wash.

With the newborn prefolds DH always just trifolded the prefold in the cover. I prefered the jellyroll fold with those diapers because they are so small.

Now that we are using infant prefolds, I always do the angel wing fold with a snappi.

This site lists a lot of different types of folds:

We do the angel wing fold with a snappi, it works pretty well. We just upgraded to the premium sized prefold as our 11-week-old is already growing out of the newborn size, so I'm looking for new ways to fold the extra fabric. I'm a visual person who needs to see the diaper being folded to "get it." If you do a youtube search, there are tons of video demonstrations out there.

For what it's worth, my husband is much better at folding diapers than I am, and he really took the initiative to get us using prefolds. Why do we always assume we need to dumb things down for our husbands?

Thanks everyone, and Addie..for me it's because he is REALLY worried about this diaper thing....he wasn't fond of it in the least when we did disposables for the first two!

We have been doing the jelly roll fold since DD was a couple of weeks old. Before that we tried the bikini twist but didn't like the way the poop got on both sides and it didn't hold in the poop at the legs.

DH is most comfortable with normal PFs and whenever I have bought other things (fitteds, hemp PFs, bamboo PFs) he just reaches for a regualr PF. He will use a BumGenius if pushed, but PFs are his comfort zone.

I think he will be fine as you have other kids. So at least he won't be scared about how to handle the baby as you are with the first. So it's just the learning curve of the diaper. He should def practice a fold using a teddy or doll before the baby comes. Just choose one - don't complicate the issue (I made this mistake)
