I am putting together a Valentine's Day package for the sons of my friend, who recently passed away (unexpectedly). I got The Daddy Book by Todd Parr for the 6 year old (who was just adopted a year ago from Guatamala and is still learning English to a certain extent) because it's a wonderful way to celebrate the relationship between this child and his remaining parent.
I had a great book in mind for the 8 year old - Space Race by Sylvia Waugh - but it's out-of-print and I'm hesitant to buy a used copy over the internet as a gift for someone. What I like about Space Race is that it's an adventure that an 8 year old would like reading about, but it also includes a loving relationship b/w father and son (the mom had died, but that's not a big part of the story). I'd love to find a book with a similar approach - a child's adventure that includes a great father-son relationship. I'm also open to suggestions, though, for stories an 8 year boy could get into that also involve dealing with the death of a beloved parent.
Help!! I'm running out of time...
(I may have to send my own copy of "Space Race" I guess)
