Pelvic exams on the unconscious--has anyone heard about this?

I can hardly believe it to be true. Has it been discussed on Mothering but I've missed it? How in the world is this legal if it is true? Does anyone know if it's corroborated, or if other media has picked up on this story?

This is absolutely sickening. Infuriating. I cannot believe for one second that anyone believed this was ethical or that women implied consent. If I ever found out that this happened to me, someone would be in big, big trouble.

That is horrible.

I am in the US. My OB-gyn did ask for consent when I went in for a couple of gynecological surgical procedures at a teaching hospital, but I'm not sure I'd call it informed consent. She asked for my consent to do a pelvic exam while under anesthesia, but she didn't spell out the fact that the exam would be performed by the student who was going to be observing my procedures.

I'm sure I'd have said yes if she'd explained in detail, but I still wish she'd been up front about her motivation for asking for consent for a pelvic exam.

That is appalling!
