new question post #3 - another Curly Purly Soaker question...

the curly purly pattern has been kicking my butt. just not very detailed for a knitter who's not used to knitting by pattern. the LTK pattern was so clear in comparison!

anyway, i'm very confused, because i've done the initial ribbing, and then she says to do the (first) short row between the two markers. of course this must be the "back" of the soaker, which is the part of the round that has my cast-on tail, thus the beginning of each round.

my question is, won't this throw the short rows off b/c i'll be knitting a partial row, then reversing for the short row and back across again? seems like i'll have an extra row each time on (about) half of this area because of where the round "begins" - from the cast-on spot. agh - can't for the life of me reason this out .

but so many people love this pattern, i know it's just me.

Hi, again! To the extent you're right (and I've just never really thought about it), it makes absolutely no difference - visually or functionally - in the final product and has zero impact on the fit or function. Actually, I now do that with all of my soakers/longies, just to put the join in the back my garment.

Just forge on and you'll find that the pattern actually does work out just fine.

honeybunmom, heh, i should open up a private line to your knitting expertise .

ok, so i am right at least - it was driving me crazy! i don't really get how it could not make a difference in a garment to have that extra partial row, especially three times as it will be in this pattern, but i certainly trust experienced soaker knitters to know best.

thanks again...

k, another question... honeybunmum or anyone out there who's done this pattern before:

i'm to the crotch portion of the soaker. the pattern says:

"measure the leg opening, and continue in stockinette without decreasing until the leg opening measures 9 (i'm doing NB size) inches."

there will be two leg openings, where i'm about to be picking up stitches after i graft the crotch seam. so, i'm not sure what opening i'd be measuring (especially since there's nothing closed up yet), or what i'm knitting to the measurement of 9 inches. would that be the total measurement of the section i'm on (front) from the wasteband?

help! thank you so much in advance.

I'm pretty sure that is the flap you're knitting. That means, when it is folded up to graft, the leg openings will be 4.5" deep, or 9" around, to accommodate a thigh with a circumference of 9". I'll go take a look at the pattern and confirm.

For the first question, your reasoning is off. Just because the instructions say to start at the center back, doesn't mean you're miraculously adding a row there. You're already working that row... look at it this way, you start with the first row half done already, the instructions have you do the second half of the first row, turn and do the second row, turn back and you've finished your short rows and you're back to straight knitting. Essentially it doesn't matter where you "start" or "end" your short rows, so long as you place the "wrap and turn" in the correct (hip) position.

As for the second question, it is the flap you're measuring. That flap will create the leg opening, so it is what you're measuring. From the point you started working back and forth instead of in the round.

ETA - you'd probably get more help on this if you posted these questions in the Yarn Crafts section.
