Is my 10 month old REALLY too small?

I have found a creature I didn't think existed- a natural parenting-minded pediatrician! And of all places in New York, where I have been having a heck of a time with that one. She is super supportive of my spaced out vaxes (in fact, she told me that she continues to have concerns in regards to aluminum and the immune system's ability to handle so many shots at once), she co-sleeps with her kids, and she breast fed until her son self-weaned at 24 months.

One thing, though...She said she is concerned about my DS's weight, which is 17lbs 4oz. at 10 months. He was born at 7 lbs., and 15lbs by 5.5 months. This doesn't seem so bad to me. He is not HUGE, but he is chubby and built solid. He runs around all day at top speed, and has been since 9 months. Could it be that he is super active? She said he may have a high metabolism, in which case I need to give him more fats more often. I give him solids all day long, and bf on demand. He has no teeth yet, but he gets a good amount of food down. 17lbs. 4 oz. doesn't seem so small to me...anyone else?

A little small, but not tiny. How's his height for weight? Are you or his dad smaller people (or were you smaller kids)? Has he been growing pretty steadily or has he dropped off his own curve recently?

There's a lot more to look at than *just* weight.

My ds was 18lbs even at 12 months, so I say he's fine. My guy was also moving all the time from a young age (he crawled REALLY early) so he was just burning off any calories he was getting.

How is his height compared to his genetics (like his he on the shorter end while you and his dh are on the taller end?) My guy has always been on the tall side of the height chart, but his dad was 6'2" and 150lbs when we got married (he was 20 years old) so string-bean-nes is a genetic trait for him.

What does the growth chart look like. I know that DS has stayed in the same precentage range since birth. I know that was important to the Family DR. As long as he is gaining along the same range I wouldn't worry. DS is also below that 50% line, he is 28lbs and 36in at 33 months.

Well, that's the weird thing...I don't think they even measured his height. I thought that was super strange when I left and realized it. He was crying and trying to jump off the scale, so maybe the medical assistant got frazzled? Yep. Don't know his height, but according to clothes made for 1 year-olds he's not short. I called my mom who says I was about the same weight at his age and my DH is super super super skinny with a really quick metabolism. He eats like a horse and stays really trim. He also needs to eat every 2-3 hours to keep his energy up. I am thinking he inherited his dad's metabolism? I feel like he might have dropped off his curve, since he had doubled his birth weight at 5.5 months and has only gained a little over 2 pounds since. But he started crawling very early and now runs around and around and around...I'm thinking he is burning it off?

DD's weight gain slowed down once she got past the 6 month stage and did not pick up again until around her 1st birthday. Eating every 2-3hrs is not a lot; I'd be surprised if DD went for 3hrs without eating. Are you sure his solid intake isn't filling him up and leaving him with fewer calories? Have you tried reducing solid intake to see if he nurses more frequently?

He he. Sorry, I meant my DH eats that often.
My son nurses more often than that. I would say every 1 1/2 hrs. He is taking in a good amount of solids, but not excessive. He gets down maybe 4-5 tablespoons of something (avocado, rice, yogurt, e.t.c.) in a sitting. Because of no teeth he likes to get soft chunks of food, but if he cant chew it up ends up playing with it more than anything. He loves chewing on meat. SHould I start pureeing his meat? He's not too much into the organic canned stuff I've tried..
