I forgot to answer your question. My reasoning on the three hours is they tell you to keep supplements that are affected by antibiotics two or three (I read different things) hours away from antibiotics. I figure that the three hours is enough time, then, to clear the gut so the probiotics can replinish. If you go too long you give the bad bacteria time to take hold. Once that happens the probiotics can't usually fix the issue. They are more preventative. If you want you could do a dose three hours after and then another at the six hour point...but I would do them.

gotcha. thanks! And yes, I only read through the discussion on there, I didn't mean anything medically at all - just people's thoughts.

Agreeing with sbgrace here -- there have been plenty of medical studies done that show probiotic doses between abx doses are really helpful in warding off abx side effects, and do not interfere with abx action. The medical studies were done on probiotics being given at the halfway point between abx doses, but I like sbgrace's logic too.

If it were me, I'd dose both three hours after as well as at the halfway point. The halfway point gives the probiotics the highest chance of survival, while the three hours after ensures that something is in there as soon as possible to prevent the growth of the bad stuff.

Non-dairy snacks -- fruit, avocado, nut butter balls, smoothies, leftovers? You might want to check on the allergy forum for more ideas...

ok, first off, I think after the 3rd dose, we are starting to see improvement...I think. But I ran into a bit of a problem with administering the PB. I have an idea on how to help it a bit, but here goes...

my baby does not suck a bottle or a sippy. We started taking the AB yesterday at 1:30 pm, so 2x/day I'd imagine should be as evenly spaced out as possible, which puts us at a horrible time of night to be giving them in mid sleep or when he wakes closest to 1:30...then to have to wake up again 3 hours later for PB - which is like torture for him, because I am dumping a scoop onto a plate and using a wet finger to have it stick and putting it directly into his mouth. Maybe that is not the best way - maybe I should try adding them to a little water and using the AB plunger to administer? But, still, getting up again through the night and coming downstairs to do it just seems like a nightmare - we are barely sleeping as it is, I do not want to interrupt any good sleep we are getting...maybe I'll just give the PB at the next waking closest to 3 hrs later?

I have also pushed back the time on the AB an hour each time to get us more reasonable at night, so hopefully that's not a huge deal - I have no idea - I've never had to do an AB for my kids ever yet, and for myself, it's been years - I don't ever remember taking anything but a once a day and I'm sure I wasn't exact on the times...

Thanks for the non dairy snack ideas - I got to trader joes this morning before dh went to work and I got some things, but I decided not to be overly strict for now about the shared facility and equip labeling on ccertain things...I will after a while, just can't do it all now, hoping this major elimination will be enough to help the LO out with kicking the infection easier.

What I've done when I needed to dose in the night is syringe it all. The pharmacy will have little caps for the syringes they give. I would put the cap on, put some water in, put the probiotic powder in, put the plunger in, shake to dissolve. Cap off, carry it in the room, give it like a liquid med. My son doesn't even wake when I do that.

Glad you are giving him the antibiotics. I am a minimalist with meds and vaccines - but I would give antibiotics in your situation.

No, don't wake baby in the middle of the night to give medicine. In the morning, change your schedule to 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. (or whatever close to that - 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. is fine. 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. is fine.) Just do one dose in the morning and one at night.

Glad your LO is feeling better.
