Which 1st grade math workbook?

Ds is absolutely breezing through our Calvert kindergarten math - we will finish way early and since he really likes math, I'd like to continue with some 1st grade math. There are all sorts of workbooks out there - can anyone give me some suggestions?

I'd download the Math Mammoth stuff and print the pages as needed. I really, really love it, and the price is great!

We love Miquon Math here - it gets them thinking about why math works and not just the how to do math.

Thanks - I'll check them both out!

I bought the "Scholastic 100 Math Activities Kids Need to do by 1st Grade" and my son really likes it. (He's in Kindy, but homeschooled last year with Right Start Level A.) It's very colorful... and engaging. http://www.amazon.com/100-Words-Math...5130768&sr=8-1

We've also had success with some of the Kumon books. We had the money and telling time ones--as those were subjects he was interested in.

Another option would be Math Games... Hi-Ho Cherry-O, Chutes and Ladders, etc. You can also buy Math Games from Right Start. Another options would by the Funtastic Frogs set.

I also like Math Mammoth, and there is a bunch of free downloads on their too. You sign up for the newsletter, and get a link to the freebies (I think).

we actually use the math workbooks from sadler-oxford (they are a text book company) Ds was not at all interested in some of the books I had previously checked out that the majority were black-white. The sadler-oxford books (at least the math ones we have used so far) are brightly colored, include real world and cartoon pictures, have a variety of real world people represented including children with special needs. Ds needs that though so if that is a issue with being distracting to your child these are books for you.

they also have extra practice books and teacher books but honestly you only need the workbook as its pretty self explanitory. They are made well (sturdy binding/perforated) and have "chapter reviews" and quarterly tests which we keep in case we ever need to show progress (state) Plus because they are a well est. company I dont fear that tomorrow they'll be gone and they are used in several states (we move a lot) so it meets the majority standards of what your student needs to learn in x grade kinda stuff.

I like Miquon too, we supplement our curriculum with it right now and it really appeals to my 6yo math-minded child. I learned math with that program as a kid, and am excited to use it with my girls too.

For my very mathy dd, we are going to use a Singapore PM/A beka 1 combo for first grade.

I have been back and forth about A beka and Horizons Math but I think I'm leaning towards A beka.

We're using Miquon and MEP here. MEP is totally free, so you can just take a look at the lesson plans and workbook pages and see whether it interests you and where would be a good place to start.

I think they're both good programs that are strong on getting kids to really think about math.

Buying a workbook is nice if it helps you stay organized or if it will excite your kid, but I'm a big fan of printing my own worksheets piecemeal. This way I get more control over the problems (we can do as many sheets as we want on a given topic) plus I can print them on 100% post-consumer waste recycled paper.

I really like this site for worksheets; you can really customize.

That site is actually from the person responsible for the Math Mammoth program- it's meant to go along with it.

I just ordered the Miquon set. I'm so glad you recommended it - I love their concept!
