Sort of a take off on the other, v. interesting thread on Ortho that's going on now...

My 12 yo DS just got braces on this past month. I'd been told since he was 7, by 3 ortho's who I trusted, that he had a serious need for them, for functional (not just aesthetic reasons).

DS has had a worsening crossbite and uneven growth of his jaw (one side longer than the other, so that his top/bottom jaws & lips are visibly misaligned). The latter may have been caused by the former, but it's hard to say. I so wish we could have gotten him in treatment earlier- I'm sure this could have been handled better earlier. At least now we're doing it BEFORE his adolescent growth spurt- both of the orthos I've spoken to recently said that if they were faced with his issues at age 16 or 18, there would be much less they could do. We're with an ortho who we feel very good about- he has a vision supporting the development of the jaw & face, not just tooth straightening or bite correction.

My musings are about this- wondering what I can do at home to help (1) with his physical discomfort and (2) with optimally supporting the body to make all the adjustments in the soft & hard tissues that come with this.

So far I've done massage of his shoulders, neck, jaw and scalp- hoping to encourage the muscles to be more elastic. I've given him homeopathics to reduce the inflammation & discomfort.

Am thinking about the possible benefits of craniosacral therapy; also considering doing calcium/magnesium supplements (just a regular dose) to support re-calcification.

Any experience or ideas about this?
