HI ~

My 10 mos old was diagnosed with a bladder/kidney infection last Friday.....he is on a 10 day course of meds to clear things up. Our Dr is ordering an US done of his kidneys sometime in the next week or 2.

Anyone been through this already???

I don't have personal experience with your situation and it's only been 4 hours since you posted, but I wanted to bump this post up because I am sure there have been some moms with your experience. Maybe you could search this subforum for "kidney" or something.

I dont have any experience either, but I wanted to bump for you.

Is it both a bladder and kidney infection? Is this the first time he's had an infection? Is there a family history of kidney problems?

My son has never been through this but I hope your son is feeling better soon!

My dd had the u/s along with the VCUG. The u/s is painless and simple while the VCUG can be very painful. The u/s is just like one you would get when pg.

The VCUG they insert a cathiter and put dye in the bladder then watch for it to go up the wrong way.

You didnt mention the VCUG but that is usually the second step after U/S for testing for urinary reflux.

If you your ds is intact (not sure saw where your older ds was circed in an older thread) then you need to stand right there and make sure no retraction happens. If they dont have someone on staff there who knows how to do it without retracting then you need to make them bring someone in who does.

My dd had a bladder infection at birth! How the heck that could happen is beyond me, but she did have a US birth and a VCUG at about 6 weeks, again at 9ish months and one last time at 18 months. She was found to have kidney reflux during the first VCUG. This means that after the baby voids some urine backs up into the kidneys. If there's any infection in the bladder the kidneys can become infected. That's why they want to know if he has kidney reflux or not. I'm not sure if the US can show reflux or not. I was told it doesn't but that was 8 years ago.

Just a head's up if your doc orders a VCUG;

The procedure appeared to be painless and easy for my dd at 6 weeks, but more stressful at 9 months and 18 months. For those two my dd was given a sedative (they called it conscious sedation) both to help her stay still and also so she would have no memory of the event.

The most important thing I can stress about this procedure is that you ask who is going to place the catheter. It's best to have a pediatric nurse do it, not the radiology staff. We had to request a pediatric nurse and I'm glad we did because she knew what she was doing and had tons of experience catheterizing infants. An experienced person is going to have better luck getting the catheter in quickly and painlessly.

Good luck. I know you must be very worried. I hope his infection clears up quickly and he doesn't have kidney reflux.

Dd has this done also, it's not too common (though no uncommon) for babies to get UTI's or bladder infections, so they have to rule out worst case scenerio's. If you ds ends up having to have a vcug done, see if he can have something prior to calm him or mild sedation. If you bug them enough, they will agree to do it that way.

Yes ~ my older DS is circ'd (my 2 older boys are & the younger 2 are intact).

The Dr is only ordering an US right now.....

This is the first bladder infection he has had....our Dr is thinking it may have gone to his kidneys because of how high his temp was (over 103), but she said most babies would be showing other signs that he was not exhibiting at the time. There is a family history w/ kidney reflux (his cousin was treated for 3 yrs because of it) and I had a surgery @ 6 mos due to issues w/ my urinary tract.

THANKS for the bumps too!!!

If he needs a catheter at any point, and you suspect the nurse might try to retract (sometimes they say they won't but do) ask for a NICU nurse or a nurse who went to school in a non-circ'ing country (there are many Irish and Russian trained nurses where I live) to place it.

I agree with pp's if you ever need a cath, just be sure they have someone experienced, and be sure that you are there to keep an eye on them. An u/s should show if there are any significant structural problems or abnormalities, but it won't show reflux.
