In fact, I found this lovely... this past weekend there was a couples retreat for some clients of my midwife (eight couples in total) and on Sunday we were sent home with sack lunches.... on the sandwiches were (ready for this?! ... .....) .. TURKEY lunchmeat and SPROUTS! Both of which are often on the 'naughty list' of foods not to eat. But, that was the meal for all the preggo women and their husbands I loved every bite of that DELICIOUS sandwich!!
Ok, I didn't know sprouts were also on the frickin no list. The best damn thing I've had to eat all pregnancy was a turkey coldcut sandwhich with sprouts. I think it had some sort of soft cheese on it, too. eeek!!! the horror!

I agree that when you're actually hungry and not barfing, just eat it.

The one time this pg that I gave in to a craving for an Italian Hoagie (I am in Philly) I felt guilty and ate it really fast!! As if that would make a difference.

Listeriosis kills 1 in 5 people that get it. It seems absurd to me to avoid deli meats during pregnancy if we don't avoid it when we're not pregnant. Pregnant woman are more likely to 'catch' it, in the same way that immunosuppressed people are, but I'd rather work on my immunity than be paranoid, personally. Obviously there's a pretty small risk there, in any case. I'm far more concerned about the mercury proven to be in fish than a tiny minuscule chance that I might contract an infection that could easily have killed me anyway, whether or not I am pregnant.

Or, you know, car accidents. Thousands of people die a day in car accidents. Maybe I'll just stay home and never go anywhere. Electrical house fires are a big one too, I better live in the dark and cold. And so on...

I'm not planning to eat much differently this pregnancy than I do normally. If something is a "risky" food for pregnant women, then I don't think anyone should be eating it at anytime.

Due to los' food sensitivities, we are gluten/soy/egg/nut free... which means we purchase practically no prepared or processed foods. The only "deli" meat we buy is homemade ham from a local butcher that is processed without nitrites, and also their gluten-free, all beef, homemade hotdogs.

The only differences for me will be making a more concerted effort to avoid sugar (except for my dark chocolate which I need to eat in more moderation), eat more vegetables, make sure I take my probiotics and folic acid, and avoid pastuerized dairy (except for some occasional cheese). But raw milk, cream, and cheese, from our trusted local farmer will still be a big feature in my diet.
