6 day old soaking a KL0 every 2 hours?

I'm using a rental package of KL0s for my newborn with Thirsties covers. I had heard complaints of them not being absorbant enough after the LO was a month or two old, but I didn't think I'd have that issue now!

Right now she is completely soaking through a KL0 in less than 2 hours. I try to change her that often anyway (don't want her to have to sit in her pee), but she occasionally take a 3+ hour nap and I hate that it wakes her up (leaks onto her clothes).

I know that many of the diapers sent to us in the rental were brand new, so maybe they just haven't been prepped enough and as we wash them they'll become more absorbant. Also, my friend mentioned that too much foremilk and not enough hindmilk might cause the baby to pee more than normal...so maybe after my supply evens out she'll pee a more reasonable amount?? ( I guess thats more of a BFing question, but if anyone here knows, go for it.)

I know its not the fit. The only reason she's leaking through the cover is because theres no where else for the pee to go, the KL0 is totally soaked--I could wring pee out of it.

So any ideas? I really want these diapers to work for at least a month or two!

How many times have they been washed?

Do you have/have you tried putting an extra doubler in the dipe?

I found that I always needed a doubler w/ kissaluvs even when she was tiny. They are only about as absorbant as a prefold & I've always had to use a doubler w/ those too.

I had the same problem with the Kissaluvs. I really wanted to love them, but DS soaked through them WAY too quickly. Nver thought to try a doubler though. I have found that bamboo fitteds are much more absorbent for us.

I'm not sure how the company that I got them from prepped them. I would assume that they know how to prep a dipe adequately, though, you know? I've only washed them once.

I haven't tried a doubler. That sounds like such a PITA too (esp. for anyone else having to change her diaper) because its not like I could use a snap-in doubler or something. It would have to be "assembled" everytime.

So, if i were to use a doubler, what kind would you recommend? (you're not supposed to put certain fabrics up against their skin, right?) I would need something fairly cheap as I don't have a ton of money to drop on diapers for just a couple of months. Would I lay it inside the fitted or between the fitted and the cover? And is there some sort of doubler I could get that I would be able to use later on (once she's out of the KL0s) so I could actually get some use out of them?

We just use trifolded infant prefolds. Actually I guess they are the newborn size but the infant size would work and you could use them for a little while after she outgrows the KL0s or you could use them as burp rags/ house rags. They are cheap too. I put them between the baby and the diaper so they don't slip out of place. You could try outside though.

Good luck!

you could even use 100% cotton washcloths as doublers, just lay them in the diaper & put the diaper on.

or Kissaluvs makes their own doublers

I'm thinking about either getting these:
http://www.diapersafari.com/products...asp?ProdID=465

or these:

what do you guys think? I could always stuff pockets with them (in addition to a regular sized insert) or add them to my TinyTush OneSize (which is what DD1 wears now) for extra absorbancy at night, right??

The same was true for us. I used the Kissaluvs doublers and they worked very well.

both of those look like they would do what you want them to do. the hemp will be a bit more absorbant. if down the road you want to stuff pockets w/ them you will probably need to use 2.

I have supersoakers, so yeah, I can see it. My kids need two hemp inserts *and* a [cotton] preemie prefold on top in their pocket diapers by the time they hit 6mo. So a 6wo soaking a KL0 in minutes? Sounds about right for my household.

Having extra soakers around can only help you in the long run. That and extra wipes - I've never regretted having extras of either of those over the years.

Soaking every two hours for a newborn sounds right. If they were more absorbent, then she's sitting in her own urine and you really don't want that.

This stage will pass soon. One of the great parts about cloth is you change the babies more often and you become more aware of their body's needs.

Is the kissaluv the old style or the new? I ordered some 2.0 which are supposed to be more absorbant/thicker or something..

I wanted to second that your LO sounds completely normal. Around that age, DS was overflowing a SPOSIE every hour or two! We started using flats (origami fold). They're very bulky at that age, but all that cotton did the job. We stopped having leaks.

Sounds like you just need more fabric in there.

Totally normal. It is rare to make it more than 2 hours in any diaper at that age.
