Now that makes no sense

I have seen so many well written birth plans. I HATE it when this is what it looks like(happens way too often):

_______'s and_______'s birth plan

We understand the safety of our child is number one. This is why we have given a lot of thought and done a lot of research to write this birth plan. We appreciate your considerationTo me this implies that a healthy baby is the most important thing and they are flexible to change if absolutely necessary

We plan to have a completely natural delivery (no pain meds, pitocin, AROM) No problem
We hope to use natural methods to help labor progress and for pain management (Shower, tub, massage, music) Great that's my specialty
Please do not ask if I want meds You got it not a single word
we plan to defer the vit K and e-mycin ointment Not too big a deal, understandable
We will be breastfeeding so please no bottles or pacifiers We wouldn't anyways and I will place the baby skin to skin right after he is born.

...Add as many other details you can think of

We do plan to circumcise our son (you had me until here)

Please explain why you would go to such lengths to keep your baby "safe" just to circumcise him? IT MAKES NO SENSE!!!
BTW good luck getting someone to circ your son without getting vit k, which gives your baby's clotting factors a boost. Hemorrhage is already a risk factor. It just doesn't fit

I think most uninformed/uneducated people consider it a "necessary evil." I think another problem is that circumcision has been touted as just a "quick snip" as if they were trimming a fingernail or just a loose flap of skin. Many parents are blind to the reality of the procedure since it is often done behind closed doors.

If you want to turn anyone off to the idea of circumcision, just make them watch the procedure. I wish it was required.

It doesn't make sense but so many people think it has to be done.I've even heard of people having preemie babies and they struggle to keep them alive and then circumcise them when they are well enough.

my friend circ her 26 weeker the day b4 they left nicu after 3 mos there. we didnt knwo back then.

and even though i have recently done a total 180 on my views on circ, i did circ my son after refusing vit k. we just waited til day 8, and no, i'm not jewish.

again FTR, i am now not in favor of circ and have even convinced at least one friend to keep her ds intact.

That gets me too!

it really irks me too, when I think about couples who go through such lengths to consciously ensure a natural, safe, un-medicated labor and delivery and chose something so harmful, non holistic and unnecessary shortly there after. Maybe during the course of one's self about natural birth it's possible to miss any info on circ? In the Business of Being Born there is a lot of compelling and interesting information, but circ gets not mention and I think it wouldnt have been out of the scope of the documentary to mention it. I second offering them a video or DVD of the operation, they may thank you later.

Yep, I see birth plans like that at my hospital all the time. In current times, I find it really unlikely that a parent could research all things birth related, vax, related, breastfeeding and intervention related and not be informed on circ risks or how it's unnecessary. I might have believed this 10 or more years ago, but not today. These parents just want to circ no matter what, probably because daddy has issues he's not ready to face.

I actually know a couple IRL who homebirth, homeschool, EBF & CLW, no vax, natural foods only, etc. - the husband is very intelligent and knows practically everything! They still circed their son because the father believes it will protect against HIV. ***I just typed a bunch of stuff that I deleted - bottom line, daddy was just looking for a reason to circ. Most "excuses" defy all logic, IMO.

I know not everyone will agree with all the choices I make but it is odd to see a birth plan all natural, including no Vit K and then the parent still wants to circ. If you insist on doing a hosp. circ in the first few days of life, by all means, please get the Vit K injection.

A bit OT but at my local screening of BoBB a gentleman from a local NoCirc chapter was there and passed out some literature!

I remember reading the blog of a woman who had a severely premature baby boy. She had him circ'd after months of being in the NICU Even worse, he has some lasting disabilities and while he can perform some basic things (eating, washing himself, etc), he will never live a normal life. So the pain he went through, after MONTHS of pain in the NICU, for this "beautiful, sexually perfect penis" was all in vain. Of course, I'm sure the mother would argue that at least he can keep it clean now

But people are mad. I know women who eschewed the swine flu vax during pregnancy because it is "so so harmful" but then got the rhogum shot 3 times without even checking if their DH was actually rhesus positive first. People concentrate on known knowns and known unknowns. They don't know about the unknown unknowns until someone tells them.
