Doula at midwife attended homebirths: - Page 2

My last 4 births were homebirths, out of the four I had a doula at three (#5,6 7). My #8 I didnt have a doula...wish I did! This next time around you bet I'm gonna have a doula. While my midwives were great, there is something extra a doula brings to the birth. I'm also a doula and have been lucky enough to be invited to several homebirths.

I just discussed this with my MW at my last appointment. I was especially interested in her thoughts, because she is also a birth doula, so has an excellent perspective of both sides of the coin. She told me that while during the majority of labor she would be working with me with comfort techniques as well as helping the baby to be in an optimal position, etc...once I was actively nearing the birth, her focus would have to change, and she wouldn't really be "available" for caring for me in the way a doula specifically there for that purpose would.

Her final thought was: if I wanted a doula present, then I should have one.
