Urinalysis--Ketones high?

Took DD to the doc for possible bladder infection (she's been peeing her pants a lot lately). The urinalysis came back saying she had a large amount of ketones in her urine but no infection. Now the clinic is saying she must come in for a fasting blood sugar test to make sure she isn't diabetic. She was vomiting the evening before I took her in (no fever, a stomachache--maybe she ate something that didn't agree with her) and so hungry the whole time we were at the clinic (we had to wait about an hour for her to urinate, then we had to wait another hour to see the doc--thought it would be a quick appt then we would eat after since I had to drag her out of bed to go in). I haven't noticed any other symptoms. . .she isn't extremely thirsty, isn't losing weight. She does crave sweets a lot (to the point of taking money from DH's wallet to sneak to the store to buy them when she's out playing). So, what do you all think?? I've been reading all day about diabetes and ketones and am totally freaked. . .then again, I read that her being so hungry could have also caused the high ketones--ugh!

From what you've written it sounds more likely to be dehydration to me. Would it be possible to repeat the urine test when she has been eating and drinking normally before going down the path of blood tests?

To be honest, it does sound like diabetes. Are they jumping right to a blood draw and bypassing the finger prick? For us, there was a ketone test, followed by a finger prick, followed by the hospital. I would get the testing done - better to be confirmed as not diabetes than to overlook it.

Good luck - I hope she's feeling better soon!

When the 1st doctor got the urine results back she said it was probably because DD had been sick and not to worry about it. Then, 2 days later (last Friday), she called and recommended going into the clinic "a few times at different times" to have DD's finger pricked. She said we'd need another doctor's visit so they could make the order, but she said it wasn't urgent. . .just something to look into. Monday, another doctor from the clinic (of course the one I've made formal complaints against) called and said DD needed to come in immediately for a fasting blood test (it was like noon when he called). I explained that she couldn't get a fasting blood test that day (she'd already eaten, my BFF was moving and I was watching her kids/baby this week) but I would call for an appt. Then Tuesday, I had to drive DH to work and since the clinic is there (we live 30 minutes away from the clinic) I called and asked if she could get the blood draw (she hadn't eaten yet) since she'd probably need it before seeing the doctor anyway, they said no, she had to see the doc first. So, today I was called by the Nurse at the clinic who said I needed to bring her in today to see the doc. I couldn't (my friend leaves tomorrow and I was watching her kids again) and made an appt for tomorrow morning at 9:30am. The nurse then called me this afternoon and said DD has to have a blood test before seeing the doctor--ugh. . .sooooo, she's getting it done in the morning (7:30am at one clinic 30 minutes away, so we can get the results by 9:30am at the other clinic 30 minutes in the opposite direction). I'd ask for another urinalysis, but who knows what they'd put me through for that and the first doctor who said just to bring her in for finger sticks is on a ship out to sea for the next 2 weeks. It's just all so crazy. My DH said he's worried because of the incompetence and wants all results gone over by our stateside doc (who hasn't seen our family for 3 years now--so who knows what he'll think when I send everything to him).

Let us know how the tests go, we'll be thinking of you.

fasting isn't required to diagnose juvenile diabetes. please get her tested asap because many children die before diagnosis. it's nothing controlled by diet, etc. They can run an a1c test, test two hours after eating to get a general number. having potty accidents is usually a sign of type 1, my son vomitted a lot the day he was diagnosed.

Got the test results back this morning. . .she's totally fine I'm so happy!! I still think we need to change our eating habits since there is so much Diabetes in DH's family (everyone except DH has Juvenile or Type 2) and she's very "addicted" to sugar. Thank you all so much for your advice and help. . .it's a very scary thing.

that's great! just to clarify, sugar doesn't cause juvenile diabetes-it's an autoimmune disease, but it is great to eat healthy regardless

Do a google search for Ketotic Hypoglycemia. It's possible that your daughter's vomiting was the result of low blood sugar. The Mayo Clinic states that a build up of ketones in the blood can lead to coma and other serious problems.
