Cheesecloth substitute

Is there anything I can use and I might have at home in place of cheesecloth?

Depends on what you're trying to do with it. I usually use muslin or a flour-sack towel.

ETA - that's what I always use for draining yogurt to make yogurt cheese. Scrape it out, rinse it, hang it to dry before tossing it in the hamper (so it doesn't mold).

If you are using it to drain something (eg. yoghurt to make yoghurt cheese), then a paper coffee filter may work.

If you are wrapping up a pudding or a ham, then an old linen pillowcase works fairly well.

I'm not sure what paneer is like, but I had good luck yesterday draining yogurt with a coffee filter.
