I'm going to offer a completely different point of view and say I LOOOOOVE my flats! LOOOOOVE them! I use the origami fold but instead of pinning, just fasten the wrap over them, or pin them with one pin in the center when using a soaker. They're super absorbent, never leak, never have a blowout, they wash beautifully, and they're cheap! I got mine at Little Lions and they were $12.25/dozen. Like prefolds, they do need to be prepped by washing a bunch of times but then they're so soft and snuggly.

Only con for me is they're a bit bulky, though I don't think they're that much bulkier than any cloth diaper.

I never found it hard to fold them and neither did DH. One thing I would say is they're huge on a newborn. I mean, HUGE fluffy butt. For my next LO, I think I'll stock up on a few dozen newborn prefolds and make some flannel doublers for when he/she is really tiny. The flats fit my baby fine by about 8 to 9 lbs.

Oh, and they're one-size too!

I'm an All in One gal. They were the first kind I ever tried... and after trying everything else under the sun with our newest, I'm back. My favorite brands right now are the Bg Organics and Nana's Bottoms on Hyenacart. Nana's are super affordable and you get to choose your options; I like birdseye with hemp soakers.

And yup, they take longer to dry than most other diapers. Totally.worth.it for me. I need a lot of diapers and cannot deal with a bunch of pieces that must be put together.

I love nanipoo fitteds for newborns.. they have umbilical dips on them.. but I have tiny babies.. I use fuzzibunz in medium/petite range because I will be back at work by then and dp finds them the easiest to use.

In order to save myself the typing, I went and put all my opinions in one blog, I wish I would have done that sooner because I get so many questions from friends about this sort of thing.
I hope its okay to post links to blogs..

We've used a little bit of everything...

In the newborn stage, I loved prefolds and covers. We used Thirsties covers, for the most part. So easy to use and so cheap when we were going through that many diapers in a day. I was able to use the smaller size prefolds until she was about 6 or 7 months old, but my girl is pretty skinny so I don't know if that's the norm.

Now, we're using a lot more AIOs during the day. I really like the BumGenius Organic AIOs w/snaps. I use those as often as possible, but don't have enough to use them full time yet, so we use prefolds thrown in there as well. And we double stuff pockets at night.

I went through a phase when I like fitteds too. But for the price you pay per fitted diaper and needing to buy the covers as well, I preferred the prefolds. I recently went to a cloth diapering class and from what I learned there, we may invest in a couple of Goodmama's fitteds diapers for overnight use in the future. DD has been wetting more heavily at night and these are super absorbent.

NAK

I'm just 3 weeks in, so I can only speak to the newborn phase...

We love our green mountain diaper newborn prefolds -orange edged. I have the next size up too. I have newborn bummis covers (SWW, super snap, and original) and a nb prowrap (super cheap) and like them fine, but now I wish I'd spent the money on the thirsties duo (just got one) because it has a much longer life as it is a '2 size' diaper and the fit is great on my newborn with room to grow. I won't buy any other cover without leg gussets (all the newborn covers I got didn't have them...) Also, I thought I'd like snaps, but for covers I get a better fit from aplix/velcro. It's a lot easier and faster too.

We still use sposies at night- all the free ones from our baby shower. Also when out a while cause traveling with cloth is bulkier and we are still new at bringing her out.

I am very happy with my planetwise wet bags- large for diapers, dirty clothes, etc. And a wipes size for pre-moistened wipes (or toiletries that could leak).

I did buy pockets to try- fuzzi bunz sized and OS. So far I like the prefolds better, but the plan is to use pockets at night.

lets see, oh, i use snappis and haven't had 1 leak with my prefolds and covers. Sposies have leaked several times! Fuzzi bunz OS leaked once but I might not have had it snapped to the right size...it was the first use.

for wipes i did buy some, but i am more happy with the cheap thin little baby wash clothes i got as gifts from walmart...great for cleaning nooks and crannies second favorite are the thin flannel wipes that came with my planetwise wet bag (splurge item, so cute, could have just used a ziploc...or travel with dry wipes and a spray bottle, but hey it's reusable and multipurpose, right?...)

I love our GMD prefolds. We bought the organic unbleached ones when we moved to the red edge and they are super soft and so absorbant. This is my favorite diaper. We snappi these.

We also have a few little lions fitteds, Great diaper, nothing fancy, and great price. These are nice to have when DD is in wiggle mode. I don't like the trim version...the originals are much better.

MEOS are DH's favorites. He likes the snaps. These need the doubler for sure. Nice diaper, will fit through PL most likely, and are easy to care for. DD is petitite and they didn't really fit her till she was about 8 months old or so (13 #'s maybe). Not our most absorbant diaper.

Covers:
Love thirsties. Bummis great too. We are using wool more and more but during the runny poop phase (and when she pooped all the time!) I used PUL more. Now its mostly wool except for longer outings out and about.

Favorite wool for day: aristocrat soaker or longies, natural blue cloud soaker or wrap (etsy seller), loveybums wool crepe wrap, plus numerous etsy longies recycle from sweaters.

favorite wool for night: disana wool soaker. So great! Bullet proof and now comes in pretty colors. The aristocrats and natural blue cloud are also good at night.
