i heard on NPR today that those who hated The Last Temptation of Christ love The PAssion, and Those who hate the Passion love TLTOC.
It's been awhile since I saw TLTOC. Can someone refresh my memory of what the big deal was back when that came out?

I never have seen it. I found a disc of it about a yr ago at Blockbuster, started to watch it, and found it to be damaged to unwatchability after 1/2 an hour. Hmmm, I wonder who "accidently" scratched it?

darylll,
i'm surprised blockbuster had it. For the longest time they didn't even carry it.
I think the owner of blockbuster is a fundamentalist christian.

I loved Last Temptation of Christ. People were just ticked off that the film showed christ getting married, living a secular life..pretty tame in comparison to today's films. It is based on a book of fiction. Go to amazon and read more about the book....

I have thought about the last temptation many times. I remember when it came out Scorcese's priest had to speak out in his defense quite a bit.

I thought it was great, and it's one of my favorite soundtracks ever.

It showed Christ as a human man, with weaknesses.......fearful of his fate and questioning everything. I found it very moving and realistic.

The corporate Blockbuster? I worked for Blockbuster for awhile, but for one of the franchises (the largest franchisee, actually). Those owners were Jewish.

I saw The Last Temptation of Christ many years ago and found it quite funny. But that is because my friend (who was and still is a devout Christian, but not a literalist) was cracking jokes. There was one point where Jesus threw down some seeds and fruit trees sprung up. My friend said, "Oh look, it's Jesus Appleseed." I guess you had to be there, but that cracked me up as my friend was not trying to be funny, he was voicing his disgust. He was upset by certain aspects of the film, and pointed out some of the heresies wherever he saw them. He is Orthodox now, not Roman Catholic.

My main complaint with it, besides some of the accents (Brooklyn, Bronx? I dunno), was that Christ saw the kind of life he could have had, then saw the ramifications of that and made his choice accordingly. It was supposed to be uplifting because he chose to go to sacrifice himself for humanity, but he saw what would happen if he didn't. At least that was my interpretation, but it was sooooo long ago that I saw it.

I remember really liking the Last Temptation, but I've forgotten how it went, for the most part.

(Ladylee, I loved the soundtrack, too-- I'm a big Peter Gabriel fan. His new album is great!)

peace,

Great movie. I love the scene with John the Baptist in the desert. And, yea, the soundtrack is great too.

I’ve missed all the hype about the Passion but from what I hear it doesn’t sound like my kind of movie.

yes, i loved the soundtrack as well.
i also read the book...
thanks for the posts, you have refreshed my memory.
if i remember, there were HUGE protests against this movie, at actual theaters. This did not occur with "the passion".... at least not that i'm aware of.

I loved this movie.

I love Willem Defoe too.

My oldest son thought it was really amazing, and that is saying alot. I don't think he expected to like it.

Someday I have to get that on DVD.

Joyce in the mts.
