Need ideas/advice DS wants to act

DS wants to be on tv. He's very extroverted and verbal. I saw this advertisment for a company called ProScout that came to my city last week and I thought about taking him there. Apparently, they scout for actors aged 4-17. I checked the company out on the internet and I found a lot of negative comments so I decided against going out for this opportunity. I think ds would be a good candidate for doing commercials, print, etc because of his out-going personality, verbal skills, and ability to follow direction, but I have absolutely no idea how to proceed with getting him involved with something or even where to start looking . Any ideas?

TIA - Kate

I'd see if there's a local youth theatre class first. I know we have them for pretty young kids.

I have worked in television for many years. I would find out what reputable agents you have in your area and have a meeting. They will want a photo (professional or not) and to meet your child. If you have a good agent you will get appropriate calls for auditions from local and out of town sources.

Enrolling in theater to become active in your community is the best idea. Find out what outlets are available in your area. One area that is a wonderful area to go into is voice work too.

beanma - thanks for that tip. I checked the internet and we do have a Children's Youth Theatre in downtown Phoenix that has classes starting at age 3. Thanks!!

Ravenlunatic - thanks !! How do you find a reputable agent? Is there some sort of state or nat'l organization that these casting agents would belong to?

Another vote for finding a good theatre company. The theatre group may have professionals who have ties with the industry. Look for membership in acting industry associations that will set some quality and ethical standards. I'm not sure if they exist in your area, but if they do, it adds a little measure of comfort.

There are lots of drama groups that don't belong to any kind of association, and they are fun and interesting and good places to try theatre and film. If you're looking for something more professional though, I'd ask about the experience of the people involved and their credentials.

My younger brother started acting at a young age. He's 35, now. In any event, his experience started out with local theater as well and continued through attending a fine arts high school and ultimately Julliard right out of high school for his BFA. So, I agree with others that recommend the children's theater route.
