Based on your first look, how would you pronounce Keane?

Yup, just like the band.

Interesting that you connected the two... what did you think the pronunciation of Keane would be?

We want the pronunciation to be "keen" but DH really wants this spelling (Keane) and I'm worried people who aren't familiar with the name might be tempted to pronounce it like Kian (which is a lovely name... I just want to avoid confusion).

I can't imagine seeing "Keane" and pronouncing it anything other than "keen."

Arriving at Kian from Keane would really be a stretch. I don't think your dh has anything to worry about.

Not crazy about last names as first names, though.

well... when I first saw the band Keanes name I automatically pronounced it Keen and was right... I think its a fairly safe name. Only problem with it is they will always have to spell it out... but luckily most people will not automatically assume its a different spelling and just ask how its spelled.

Yes, and based on the popularity of the shoe... I think this makes a better middle name.

I dunno... Ive never heard of the shoes.

It's a shoe? To me it's just a semi-common last name...I think it would make a good first name, and it's the spelling of the last name, too, which makes it easier to pronounce.

We are considering it for a middle name only.

I never heard of the band or the shoes, but I immediately thought "keen" like Bil Keane, the "Family Circus" cartoonist.

I'm feeling old ...

I have a Kian, and would never confuse Kian with Keane in terms of pronunciation.
Keen, as in "peachy keen!"
Keen was my first thought, but when I overthink the name, I can see coming up with Kee-ann by reading it Ke-ane, but that would be overthinking it too much.

I will say that I'd feel like I was probably going to say it wrong no matter what I said based on how it's spelled and because I've never seen the name before.

Keen. like the word clean, minus the L. If its for a boy, I like Keanen, for a girl I like Keyann.

"keen"
I love it! for either boy or girl!
