Dh and I tried very hard to not tell DD No. I didn't want the toddler that goes around saying no to EVERYTHING! Well we have a toddler that goes around saying no to EVERYTHING! Sometimes I just leaugh at it and don't let it get to me but the are other times where I can't handle hearing no one more time

Do you just let the no phase run it's course?

No.

Sorry, I don't have any helpful advice, but I just couldn't resist!

This is my DS! Same thing, DH and I try not to use it often, but DS says it anyway. It is irritating, but my DS doesn't use many words, so for us, were still at the "oh, how cute, he talked" stage. I also think it does allow them to express a lot. For example, I could talk all day long to DS, offering suggestions of toys, activities, food, naps... and all he has to say is "no."
So as to how to handle it,

Ugh. We REALLY try to use phrases and words that frame things positively (like instead of saying "don't jump on the couch" we'll say "please use your inside feet") and yes I know that the idea of "inside feet" is a bit strange.....but ds "gets" inside voice, inside feet, etc.

Even at that, he still says no ALL the time.

One thing that helped me was inventing the "no" song. I'll say "are you ready for breakfast?" "no." "Well, would you like to eat and then get dressed, or get dressed and then eat?" "I NO get dressed! I NO eat! I NO like you!" "Are you feeling grumpy? Do you want mommy to give you a hug to cheer you up?" "I NO want hug!" "Are you in the mood to say no?" "I NO say no!" And then I sing the no song and he usually starts giggling and singing along and then we get on with whatever needs to happen.

The no song is (sung to the tune of BINGO)
"I know a little boy,
and all he says is no.
No, no, no, no, no,
no, no, no no no,
no, no, no no no,
His favorite word is....."

and then ds yells "NOOOOOO!!!!!" and starts laughing hysterically.

I have no idea why this works, I guess because I'm embracing the "naughty" word, but it definitely diffuses the impending tantrum. he will even sometimes ask to sing the "no song" no idea if that would help you, but you can try it.

Now if you can come up with a solution for the constant "I want...."

My DD loves No too, but she still only says one word at a time (at 19mo she has about 15 words or so). We try to rephrase the question so that No is the appropriate answer. Like instead of asking her if she has a poopy diaper ("No!") we ask her if she has a clean one ("No!") and then take her to change it.

As for "I want" I get this a lot from my daycare kids. I usually just respond by giving them an "I want" right back. I want to sleep in on Saturday, to go out for dinner, a new van, etc. etc. I don't make a move to provide what they "want" and just pretend like we are having a chat. They catch on quick, and when they change their want to a nicely asked request I give them an exaggerated "OOoohhhh, you would like for me to get that for you!! I just thought we were making conversation......."
