Lots of Poo and Diaper Rash Questions (TMI)

My baby poos A LOT!! He has a diaper rash that I can not get rid of. I have tried cloth diapers, disposable diapers, creams, airing out, yogurt in the diaper (a friend's suggestion that seemed like a good idea, but just made my bed smell like sour milk!), and his pediatrician gave him Nystatin cream. It has been three weeks and nothing is helping.

I think the fact that he poops so much is the issue. If he sneezes or coughs, a trickle of poo comes out. After every feeding- BM. It is like his little bum just oozes constantly. Is this normal?? It is so watery, it just falls out. But I can't keep him dry to get him healed up. It is making me so sad. It looks terribly painful.

The rash is just between his cheeks, with raised bumps. My initial thought is that the rash is because he is NEVER dry. My second thought is a food sensitivity since it is just on the skin around his anus. I don't think it is yeast because the Nystatin didn't help at all. (I used it for 2 weeks, 4 times a day with absolutely no change!!)

Thoughts? Suggestions? And do any of your babies ooze poo??!!

ETA: He's 6 1/2 weeks.

My LO had a yeasty diaper rash that didn't go away until I did a layer of Nystatin then a layer of zinc oxide to keep the nystatin from wearing off right away. That did the trick in two or three days and hasn't had a rash since.

My LO had a stubborn rash that lasted for a little over a month from the age of 1-2months, and he was definitely the little pooing machine back then. His rash also extended to his crotch and went from little red bumps to peeling skin.

During the rash: I washed with soap and water after each BM, let dry completely, and used some diaper rash cream. 3 times a day i would do a 10min period without diaper. I did this for a month and nothing changed.

Then i additionally did the following: Used sudocrem and went up a diaper size so that diaper fit very loosely in the crotch, and did an occasional salt water rinse after his washes. Also each diaper was worn for an absolute maximum of 1.5-2hours. The rash disappeared after about a week.

You might start with the previous suggestions (lots of air on the bum!), but also consider two things:

1) It could still be a yeast rash. . .often yeast is resistant to Nystatin. So you might have to look into other treatments for it. You could consider giving him a probiotic--they make some for babies--this will help with yeast. (That's what the yogurt was for the probiotics.)

2) A red ring around the bum-hole is/can be considered a sign of food intolerance. So if it won't clear up you could start with a non-dairy diet (he is EBF?)--try it for 2-3 weeks and be sure to eliminate all forms of dairy and see if that helps.

This really does sound like yeast. I would do what the PP said and get some infant bifidus to give him. Also, ask your doc for the Nystatin powder. It worked WAY better for us. Don't use disposable wipes, either, because they can further irritate his broken skin. These rashes can be nasty. Good luck getting it cleared up.

Thanks for the info! I called the pediatrician today about getting the powder. I'll keep treating it as yeast. We battled thrush, but that was awhile before the rash. Blah! Some many possible issues! See if we can knock it out. Just keep trying.

Oh, and yes, he is EBF.

My LO has a red ring around his rectum that most definitely gets better if I steer clear of dairy. If I forget and indulge it flares up a little. I still haven't figured out if I have to give up everything is I love butter and it would be a big loss. I substituted fresh milk and yogurt with goat milk products. they are pricey though...
My LO's rash doesn't have bumps - just a ring of irritated red skin. I make sure he doesn't sit in his poo too long, clean him thoroughly and use burt's bees diaper cream if it flares up.

I just read that corn starch can make a yeast rash worse. What is the base of the powder I have been using to help keep him dry? Corn starch.

what kind of wipes are you using? ds was allergic to regular wipes so we had to use cloth. if you are using cloth you need to mae sure you're killing any yeast that might be lurking. also he had the "allergy ring" ut I didn't know what it was. the skin around his anus/ btwn the cheeks was burned looking. when I cut out dairy it went away

I would eliminate dairy, and try some hydrocorizone cream 10%. If the hydrocorizone cream helps, than I would put my money on it that it's an allergy problem

my lo poops a lot as well...it's ridiculous.

Her rash in the first weeks looked just like you described.

The only thing I have been able to do that works is to keep her completely bare bottomed during the day (i am not ready for night time EC yet!), I keep a "potty" bowl handy to catch her waste, and lots of flat cloth dipes to lay under her.

Then at night I slather her bum in a zinc based diaper cream. She's four weeks now and two weeks rash free.

this was happening with my LO one as well! a combo of bifidus powder and Angel Baby Bottom Balm worked amazingly. and air time. the bottom balm seriously cleared up the rash in a matter of hours.

My DS is almost 11 mo and still poops many times a day!! We had a similar problem with diaper rash not too long ago and it seemed like nothing was going to work. His wasn't just bumpy though, it was raw and would sometimes bleed. It was horrible. The pedi prescribed Nystatin and it did nothing for it. I had already cut out dairy completely, so I knew that wasn't it. What finally cleared it up was cutting gluten out for a few weeks. After just a few days of not eating it, his rash was almost completely better. I actually have started eating dairy and gluten again. As long as I don't go crazy, and I take probiotics twice a day and digestive enzymes when I eat the dairy/gluten, it doesn't seem to bother his tushy anymore. We also stopped using baby wipes and just use a cloth wipe with warm water. Oh, and the Burts Baby Bee Diaper Cream is the only stuff that will work for him. Anything else made him scream and cry when it was put on the rash. Good Luck!

My baby had exactly what you describe, from the poo to the rash, for almost the first month and a half of his life. At the end of the day what worked for us was stopping the Pampers Sensitive baby wipes in favor of flannel wipes with a drop of natural baby bath and a few droppersful of GSE heavily diluted in distilled water, shaken well and sprayed over the flannel wipes to moisten them. This cleared the rash completely in 2 days and it has not yet returned (he is 11 weeks now). I was afraid it was an intolerance to something I was eating but really didn't want to do an elimination diet until trying and failing absolutely everything else, lol.

We're diaper rash free! It wasn't yeast or allergies- just plain ol' can't-stay-dry-bum. Just lots of air and Boudreaux's Butt Paste. Thanks for all the advice!

His mood has changed completely. He was miserable and now he's all smiles and coos.
