Thanks for all the responses. For the last several days he's been happy being rocked after nursing until he's just asleep, then I can put him down and pat his tush till he's fully asleep. The first day he fussed a bit (like he wasn't sure how to get to sleep without nursing, even though he didn't want to nurse!), but after that it's been relatively easy. One problem, though, is that he seems to be soothed by biting my shoulder, which is not fun. I'm trying to get him to bite a lovey or cloth diaper instead...
