Should I Be Concerned About His Weight?

so i guess we belong in this part of the forum now, my son turned 1 this mon!
today we had 1 year check up and he measured in 40th % by length and 60th by his head and 8th (!!!!!) by weight. at his last checkup at 6 mo his was in the 40th %!!!
the doc didnt seem terribly concerned, he said that they'll weigh him at the next baby checkup and just look at the trend, if he is just lean like that, thats just the way he is, if he keeps falling off the charts, we might be concerned...
but i feel like theres a mommy alarm going off in my head now - too skinny! too skinny! feed more!
for the most part we let him feed himself (unless its soup or sth like that) and he is still bfed, and gets pumped milk while im at work. he eats a lot, and seems like constantly munching on apple or toast or puffs...
i wonder if this happened because he didnt crawl till 9 mo, and when he started there was no stopping him and so he is super active and burns everything he eats...
i guess im just looking for reassurance...

Have you checked the WHO's charts for breastfed babies? I had a similar experience at DD 12 month appt. She went from the 60%'s or 70%'s (can remember exactly) to the 10%. I got some pressure to wean her and really push the solids. Sounds like your dr was more reasonable.

I went home and checked the WHO charts. On those charts she's hovered around the 50% mark her whole life.

I'd check those before anything else.

how do you properly chart on those? im confused... he is 19.10 lbs and that make him somewhere between 15th and 50th percentile, but that seems like a big spectrum...
a part of me wishes we didnt ask about these stupid percentiles (our doc won't tell you unless you ask him or unless there is a concern - and now i understand why). all this time i thought i had a moderately chubby baby, and now it turns out he's thin as a rail!!!

It's probably because he's burning off all his calories. Both my kids slowed down a lot in weight gain when they started moving.

How much does he weigh? My lil' guy was an early and constant mover. He was 16lbs at 4 months and only 18lbs at 1 year (he started crawling at 3 months and has never stopped moving.) At 2 years, he weighed a whopping 22lbs.

Also, what are his genetics like? Were either you or your dh really skinny? My dh was 150lbs soaking wet when we married. He was 6'3" and almost 21 years old. He didn't gain weight until I was pregnant with our first

ETA: okay I see your update. 19lbs is on the skinny side, but not horribly. I think when ds was 18lbs, he was marked as 15% or so. Going by the WHO scale (weight-for-age BOYS 6m-2y) he's right at 50%

My 3 year old weighs 29lbs. At 1 he was around 16 or 18 lbs. He was still BFing at that point and eating everything he was offered as well. Both myself and Baby Daddy are lean people with high metabolisms so my doctor wasn't (and isn't) worried.

It sounds like you're doing everything right. Keep up the BF and keep offering your LO solids. You could always add fattier foods, like avocado, buttered toast, etc, or coconut milk yogurts if you'd like him to gain. You may just have a lean little guy, which is fine as well.

Also, check out this tribe. http://www.mothering.com/discussions...nny+baby+tribe Lots of wise mammas and good advice in there as well. Peace~

thanks for the link! great thread!!
as far as genetics are concerned, my family is tall and skinny (well, everyone but me, after having a baby ive balooned to an elephant) and my husband's family is skinny and not too tall... it is great to know though that this is more of a chart problem than his problem

My ds is off the charts (on the bottom) for height and weight - he is 10lbs lighter and a head shorter than his friends who are all around the same age (and some younger!)

His head however, is the 90th percentile.

He is VERY healthy, happy, sleeps well, eats healthy foods (tho not in any quantaty), and he is very smart. So I dont worry. He is just small.
