Crazy loud chickens??

I live in a downtown suburban area, and am surrounded by neighbors. I'm lucky to have a big back yard, and I thought chickens would be fun and easy. I did a LOT of reading about them and spent a lot of time on the backyard chickens forum. I got three chicks. Building the coop was a MAJOR pita and far more expensive than I anticipated, even using the cheapest materials possible. We had to get rid of one of the chickens a few months back because she was extremely high strung and would run from one end of the yard to the other, shrieking her head off and acting crazy. I am very sensitive about annoying the neighbors. The ones we share the most fence space with are very cool, hippie types who encouraged me to get chickens, so at least I don't have to worry about them. Anyway, now the other two are bock bock bocking so loudly that I just keep them locked up in the coop for most of the day. That usually keeps them quiet, and will at least muffle their noise. I read so many stories of quiet, peaceful chickens pecking away happily, while the neighbors were none the wiser. Why did I get such nutty birds?? They have food and water, and ample coop and pen space. Oh man, they destroyed our yard like crazy, so now they are confined to their pen-when they aren't shrieking, that is. DS loves them, though, and they are very gentle birds with him. We have a Buff O and a Black Astralorp. I sincerely regret getting them, but my question is, is there absolutely anything I can do about the noise level? I feel that this a very silly question-how on earth do you get a chicken to shut its beak?? We also only get half the eggs they lay, since one the damn birds likes to drop its eggs *while up on the roost* I wouldn't mind all of these annoyances so much if they would just keep quiet. Any suggestions?

Okay, first pull down the roost so that naughty girl cant be a freeloader. No freeloaders allowed!

Have you tried giving them stuff to do? A bale of hay to distroy, a old tire on it's side filled with fine dirt or sand, a cabbage head strung with thick wire hung almost out of reach, maybe playing soft music out there to distract them, toss out your veggie scraps in a pile for them to rummage through. I'll try to think of more ideas. Oh I've heard of people using dog toys that hide snacks for their chickens to figure out.

My girls (5) are quiet unless something freaked them out.

Thinking of my chicken in terms of a "freeloader" has me cracking up...Yeah, that bird has a pretty good life-she's not just out there to strut around and poop all day-I want my eggs! I will see if DS can take out that roost. Yes, I should give them some stuff to do in their pen. When they were allowed to roam around the yard, they had lots of things to get into, but they would still bock like crazy anyway. Now they have access to two separate areas, one is really big. Yet they just prefer to stay right in front of the gate, pacing and attempting to break out. They are quite picky about table scraps, too. They don't like cabbage, but I've never tried to tie one up, either. I'm going to try tossing kitchen scraps out there when they get loud again, and we've got some sand I could give them to scratch it. Hmmm....come to think of it, there are several raccoons that come out at night to hang around the coop. Can the chickens tell if 'coons have been around, and would that freak them out?

What is the lighting like in your backyard?
If they get too much light, they will be strung out and will drop eggs like you mentioned.
I would consider shutters on their coop or controlling the lighting a little more.

Well, the coop is in a super shady spot, under a big tree, and the only light coming in is the 6 inches around the top that's covered in hardware cloth. Perhaps she is stressed for another reason, I hope not.

Oh ya! Those 'coons will freak chickens out (and eat them or just kill them for the hell of it). I have no idea that isn't 'mean' to get rid of them. But I'll tell you that if a racoon was found around my girls it better run fast or it will meet it's maker.

Another idea I just found mystifies my girls....a mirror. Dh's pickup bed cover is off and is in the back yard (umnnn, ya it's so white trashy looking back there with a freakin' hen on it!) and the girls spent about half an hour yeasterday looking at themselves in the window reflection.

You could also have noisy hens. Personally I've never met anyone that can't stand their noise. A rooster, heck ya but not typical bawking. It's just not at a pitch that really freaks people out. Perhaps give your fence neighbors a few eggs now and then (because you'll have more with that rotten girl laying them rather than shooting them!) for a peace offering.

There's 4 or 5 raccoons that like to hang out around the coop. They've been around the neighbor's yard forever, and they like to hang out in the tree next to the coop. They really freak me out. DH tries to scare them off with rocks, but they still come back. Perhaps I should borrow my dad's BB gun.
Now, that would be entertaining, watching some silly chickens try to figure out a mirror. I don't have an extra one, but I think it would be worth it to take one out there to see what they make of it. They bock pretty loud-it's akin to my 4 year old screaming for me while he's out back. Thankfully it's all during the day. They are loudest in the morning. They just seem so anxious and irritable all the time

I don't know what you have for your coop walls or how secure the top is but a racoon will pull a chicken through a chainlink fence leaving parts on either side. They'll also rip off a loosley secured net top. They are nasty guys.

Yeah, we kept those horrible creatures in mind when building the coop. It's made of plywood, and the only openings when it's closed are vents covered in hardware cloth. Both the chicken door and the people door have little padlocks. DH is still convinced that a 'coon can still persistently scratch and work at ripping off the door. Geez Louise, I hope it never comes to that!

Are they laying? My girls will get pretty darned loud at laying time each day. The roos will join in, too, and we have one that will actually pace back and forth, like a father waiting on his baby to be born, lol.

Well, their bocking doesn't appear to be related to egg laying. They're actually pretty quiet when they do that.

Strange! We have 17 hens and the only time they are loud is when they are announcing that they laid an egg. The roosters are pretyy much loud when ever they want!

It definitely sounds to me like they are stressed about something. Maybe that racoon isn't as far away during the day as he seems. My girls do get worked up when an eagle or hawk flies overhead.

Maybe there is something else scaring them that you don't see. A stray cat peeking out, or a large bird up in the trees?

Mine only bawk and freak out when something is stalking them or if they are begging for food/treats at the back door.

When all 30 of mine start screaming and bawking in terror it's quite loud! A stray cat came in our yard last week and I found it paralyzed in terror from all the noise.

Definitely take down the roost pole for awhile! Once she gets used to laying eggs in the nest box then you can put it back up.

I bet something IS scaring them, because come to think of it, when I lock them up in the coop, they quiet down. Cats don't bother them, because I've seen the girls completely ignore them before-cats like to walk around on top of our fence. I've been wondering where those raccoons go during the day. Maybe they AREN'T that far away, which would be horrific, since DS likes to hang out there with the chickens every day. There are several large trees around our yard. I will be on the lookout for possible predators the next time they freak out. Bocking for snacks is a possibility too. It's hilarious how those chickens will chase us all over the place, hoping for treats.

My ladies are pretty quiet except when they're laying or if something freaks them out. The freak out factor could be something as innocuous (to me, anyway; obviously not to them) as a hawk flying over, loud construction sounds, things like that.

And is 2 chickens enough? I vaguely recall reading somewhere that a minimum of 3 were needed to keep things in order.

Do you have a live trap you can put out for the raccoon? They are horrible, horrible for chickens. I've seen some pretty nasty scenes from raccoon attacks....
Sounds like you have a good alarm system something is stalking your birds.

My chickens are very quiet and docile they make soft purring type noises while they wonder around, only being loud right after laying and when they are being bothered.

Dh is building me a chicken tractor so I can move them around the yard every day so they dont destroy things.

Well, we started out with 3, but I had to return one to the feed store because she behaved oddly. This was when the other 2 were still quiet, and the third would race back and forth across the yard, making a god-awful racket, screeching her head off whenever she laid an egg. I want to get one or two more chickens, but DH is against it, since the two we have are causing us so much trouble right now.
I don't have any raccoon traps, and I'd need 5 of them. It's a mother and 4 babies. *Shuddder* it's so creepy to look out back and see several pairs of shiny eyes glaring back at you.
The girls have been quiet today
