I'm looking to buy dd a wood kitchen.

Which ones are the best AFA safety and design? Which ones do you love?

I'd love to get a colorful one but I know the paints aren't always safe.

I know this is a month late, but if you still need the recommendation, we bought DS a lovely one from Palumba. It's the "Simple Hearth" one and it is absolutely gorgeous!! Not colored, but it has different stains of wood (or some cherry and some walnut) and we don't worry about it becomming out-of-date or paint chipping. We got it for his 2.5 birthday (I think), and he's now 4 years old & still plays with it constantly. It's perfect and very sturdy. He climbs on it and throws things at it... very good quality. The only thing that's come apart is the string that holds the oven door- which is easily replaced, and that was from DS standing and jumping on the open door (which we curbed once we realized he was doing it). We also bought the Playstands from them, which we love as well. Their stuff is not super-cheap, but it will easily last multiple children, and probably multiple generations even. Hope that helps!

We got DS the set from Plan. I really like them because they use recycled rubberwood that isn't chemically treated, and their paints are made from vegetable dyes with a nontoxic finish. I've found their toys to be very durable and well made. The set is expensive, but if you can find (or start) a local coop then it can be affordable.

Angels and Elves are made in Maine by a dad (helped by his many kids) and are unfinished--so you could paint it!
