9 mo old and solids not going well...

We started our breastfed DS on solids on Dec 31 and he did ok on rice cereal, oatmeal and multi grain. Sometimes he eats the full serving and other times he doesn't eat much at all. He is 9 mo old today, though he was born about a month premature, so he's more like an 8 mo old.

I've had limited to no success with sweet potato, green beans, avocado and butternut squash. He will purse his lips and turn away. I've tried nursing him a bit before to waiting 1.5-2 hours after a nursing to feed him. He frequently gets hysterical and will just scream. I've tried to make the texture as smooth as possible, as he doesn't seem to tolerate anything with texture. With the way he screams, you would think the food is burning his throat. He nurses round the clock every 2-2.5 hours.

He also cries as soon as I start to put him in his high chair, so he definitely has an aversion. Not sure if teething could be causing his fussiness.

Just had a ped appt yesterday and he has fallen off the weight chart. For height he is in the 10th percentile. The ped was not too concerned because she said he looked healthy and both me and his dad are slender. She also suggested trying fruits since many babies love the sweetness and it will help him to like eating and I can add in the other foods later. She did that with all 5 of her kids. So, I steamed pear and pureed it with breastmilk and he hated it. He screamed and got hysterical. Same thing this morning. So, I don't know what to do. Should I be worried now or give it a few more weeks?

Don't worry about it. Let HIM lead YOU. You can't force a baby to eat. Well, you can, but it's a pain in the neck, leads to food battles and possibly overeating and obesity AND makes everyone cranky. So don't do that.

Eating solids in the first year is for EXPERIMENTATION ONLY!!! Yay! So he doesn't need to "eat".

Besides, there is far more nutrition, calories and fat in your breastmilk. If anything, let him nurse more often.

In the meantime, I'd just back off, let him be, and try again in another month or two.

No big deal. (My four babies ate solids at 11 months, 8 months, 13 months and 9 months. Not a single one of the first three would eat or tolerate baby food puree. They had bits of soft foods from our plates . The last baby, however, thinks pureed baby food is awesome. Go figure!)

Sounds like he's not ready. If he's healthy then it's okay that he's small, some kids are just small. My feeling is that if you force solids before a child is ready that it sets the child up to be a picky eater. I would probably stop for a minimum of 2 weeks and try again. Some kids really aren't ready to eat until 12mo++. My best friend's son didn't eat hardly anything until 14mo, then one day it just clicked on. He's too is small -3rd%, but otherwise healthy. Good luck!
