When you are prepping prefolds, do you have to wash the number of times it says with detergent EVERY time or can you use it the first time, dry then just run it through a rinse to get the saturated and dry, ect, ect until you reach the number of preps...

I boil mine for 10-15 minutes in a huge pot, then dump them all into the washing machine, rinse, and wash them 2 times on hot with a little detergent each time. Then I dry them in the dryer and they are fluffed perfectly!

I wash on hot w/ a bit of detergent.... boil for 10-15min.... wash again on hot w/ a bit of detergent.... extra cold rinse.... dry.... good to go

Boiling works more efficiently than washing them, IMO. I boiled with dawn, hot wash with soap of choice, and rinsed and dried. The wash/dry/wash/dry methods just take too much water and energy...

since I was prepping for a newborn, I just did hot wash with detergent, dry, then repeat.
I was using GMD unbleached prefolds. while they might not have been at their peak performance after just 2 cycles, dd wasn't peeing a lot. the diapers worked fine, though I did notice they fluffed up more within the next few washings.

chel- that's what I did for DD when she was newborn. lol only now, she is nine months old and a heavy wetter, so I want to make sure they are fully prepped before I put one on her.. I have just been washing them when I do a load of other diapers, that way I don't waste water and energy to get them prepped... The first wash and dry by themselves, then the rest whenever I did a regular load... it's taking me a week or so to prep them, but I have enough dipes to get me through until these are ready to go, just didn't know for sure next time around if I HAD to use detergent each time or not... If I didn't need detergeant, I would have just got them wet with a rinse, then dried... hmm..
