Do you have farmers markets around you? Or neighbors who grow their own garden?

I got a huge box of jars of stewed tomatoes from a farmers market for less than either fresh tomatoes at the store or several cans of tomatoes would have been. They are so much tastier that way in the winter too! Still like fresh!

Yes, I am fully aware of this Tomatoes are not at all in season here in the winter and despite having over 20 plants in my own garden last year, we didn't have enough ripe at the same to can our own. I don't have year round farmers markets (there wouldn't be tomatoes anyway) and have only been able to get tomato paste or strained tomatoes in glass jars from the store. So, yeah, definitely trying to resolve this, but for now using moderate amounts of canned tomatoes is the best I can do. I cut back on winter consumption but there are some things that just need tomatoes! Hopefully this year will be a better year for our own crop and I'll be able to can lots of my own Of course having a new baby may make that a little difficult! We'll see

This was my first pregnancy eating meat and I craved tuna with all three. I made an awesome tuna replica of kelp powder, mayo, mustard, and mashed chickpeas. You could try that! It was super good.

Yeah, there are no farmers markets here in the winter, but maybe this summer I will be able to stock up or jar our own tomatoes. Our fresh tomatoes aren't in season here either, I've just been using them to add to recipes, and they aren't that great.

I'm thinking of ordering these though: http://www.edenfoods.com/store/index.php?cPath=23_41

All their canned food is BPA free: http://www.edenfoods.com/articles/vi...rticles_id=178

My local grocery store has a few of their bean varieties, but no tomatoes, so I might just start ordering them in bulk online.

Oh, and *Aimee*, do you have a recipe? I'm going to have try that. although I did just buy some tuna, and can't wait to dig into it

I totally agree with the chickpea salad. Just mash up chickpeas and use it like tuna for sandwiches. I've been vegan for 5+ years and I started really craving tuna a couple of weeks ago. It's the only thing I miss But the chickpeas really worked for me!

jennica - I've read about Eden being so committed to BPA free and I do buy some of their products when I need canned items (beans, though I normally use dried) - but their tomatoes specifically do still have BPA because they haven't yet found an alternative In the article you linked:

For the moment, Eden Foods tomato products are packaged in industry-standard BPA-containing cans. "The FDA hasn't approved any other type of can lining for highly acidic foods," Potter said.
It is such a shame we have to work so hard to avoid these chemicals in our food!!!

bionaturae has tomato paste and strained tomatoes in glass but I haven't seen other alternatives at this time.

Anyway, sorry to stray from the original subject of tuna, but there has been an ongoing discussion here about this issue over the past couple of years and it definitely gets me fired up I would love to see more alternatives!

artemis33,

Thanks for the info about the canned tomatoes. I guess I didn't notice that they used BPA for those. How frustrating!
