Did you know that canned tomatoes are the worst type of canned food to buy? The acid in the tomatoes pulls the chemicals out of the can linings and there are much higher concentrations in tomatoes. I bought a really nifty chopper and have been just buying fresh tomatoes and chopping them up to the right consistency. It doesn't work for paste, but for everything else I can get close.

I got a huge box of jars of stewed tomatoes from a farmers market for less than either fresh tomatoes at the store or several cans of tomatoes would have been. They are so much tastier that way in the winter too! Still like fresh!

Tomatoes are not at all in season here in the winter and despite having over 20 plants in my own garden last year, we didn't have enough ripe at the same to can our own. I don't have year round farmers markets (there wouldn't be tomatoes anyway) and have only been able to get tomato paste or strained tomatoes in glass jars from the store. So, yeah, definitely trying to resolve this, but for now using moderate amounts of canned tomatoes is the best I can do. I cut back on winter consumption but there are some things that just need tomatoes! Hopefully this year will be a better year for our own crop and I'll be able to can lots of my own
Of course having a new baby may make that a little difficult! We'll see
