Not having time to pump while working

I own my own business. On one hand, I've managed to create the flexibility of working 3x/week, and taking baby with me or working from home the other days.

My baby is 8 months old and goes to daycare those 3x/week. He's been EBF except for starting some solids. He loved solids at first, though now he's slid backwards since being sick a few times.

Though I'm the "boss", and can't get in trouble for pumping too much, I am finding it increasingly difficult to have any time at all during the day to pump. The buck stops with me, and sometimes I'm in the middle of a crisis, or often simply just trying to squeeze in my work. And of course I've been playing catch-up since he's been born and I took more time off at first.

What is the minimum times I can pump to maintain my supply? Usually I end up pumping twice, but lately I really only feel I can squeeze in 1 pumping. I've never had a problem with supply. I've been getting up 1st thing in the morning and doing a pumping session where I've been getting anywhere from 5-9 oz. Then my other sessions I get anywhere from 4-8 oz. each time (decreasing when the day goes on). When I'm getting my period, this decreases to 2-4 oz.

Baby has been very random on how much he is eating while at daycare. Some days he will drink 15 oz. Other days he will only take 1 4oz bottle.

I want to make it 1 full year of breastfeeding being his main source of nutrition. After that, I'm willing for cow's milk to play a role, and of course increasing solids. I'm not necessarily looking to have him nurse until 3-4 years old. I'm ok with weaning anytime between 1 & 2.

THoughts???

I'm a stay at home mom, but with my girl sometimes I can only get 3 sessions in before she goes to bed. There are supplements to take to increase your supply, they can be found somewhere on this site. But I found that I make sure I drain myself REALLY well when I pump and stay up for an extra pumping session I can go a 8 to 9 hr stretch and maintain the same amount per day. I've heard of people who put their pumps in backpacks and vacuum, do laundry... etc, we're women, we can multi-task! Good luck! Also, mine does vary her eating as well, but she's 6 mo now, she can take anywhere from 4 to 7 oz 5 to 6x per day.

Well, I'd love to be able to pump while vaccuuming or doing laundry. However, I already do one AM pump before getting LO up. The rest of the day is working in my business where I'm having trouble finding the time. I already do multi-task while pumping, but it is difficult to be efficient. When I'm not working, the LO likes to nurse a lot, so I don't want to be using my milk up by extra pumping!

I'm just curious if going all day (up to 10 hrs) with only 1 pumping session will affect my supply. And I do have a good supply to begin with, so that's not an issue. I just don't want to screw up a good thing.

I expressed at work until my son was one. I only expressed once in an 8- to 9- hour day, and my supply was fine. I would also feed my son as soon as I got home and express from the other at the same time.

That said, I think supply varies with each mum, and I think you'll need to find out for yourself. However, given that you say you've not had any supply issues, and that you are only away from your baby 3 days a week, it sounds to me as if you may very well find that you are fine with only one expressing session while at work - especially if those are not 3 consecutive days.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on!

Do you pump on the days you are home or he is with you at work? Mornings or evenings? My personal experience, YMMV, is that by 8 months I was able to pump once during an 8 hour day and maintain my supply. I tried to have a freezer stock in case I was unable to pump. I worked as a homevisiting social worker so I was constantly on the road (and never got the hang of handsfree pumping) and in someone's home. I tried to be consistent but it was very hard. On the days I went without pumping at work, I'd pump about 2 hours after they went to bed. If my freezer stash was low, I'd pump in the am before they got up and then again at night.

It probably depends on the mom...but, I often don't get to pump at all and as soon as I got to that point my supply plummeted. Have you thought about using a manual (easy to set up) to pump for 5mins here or there?
