How long for SSI?

ugh, we applied back in July. They sent us to an independent eval thing 3 weeks ago. Said it would take about 2 weeks after that to make a decision. At the appt the Dr told us right then there was no reason why dd should not qualify. Called for a status update last Friday and it was pending, called today and they couldn't tell me anything just that they would need the local office to call me and that it would be 1-2 weeks before the local office would get back to me. Any idea how long this will take or is needing to hear from the local office a good or bad thing?

hi. my understanding is that the first determination is done at a regional type of office, and when they're done, they notify the local office. the local office, in turn, has 1-2 weeks to process their part of the decision. not sure if they are just verifying what the regional determination was, or what. so the fact that the local office has your case means you'll know soon. and i don't think it means anything else good or bad. from start to finish, my understanding is that the ssi process is supposed to take 6 months. we were just denied last week . they picked the wrong mama to deny, though! i'm going to on them like flies on poop .
good luck with everything!! a question for you - do you know if it's true that once you're approved, the payments are retroactive to the time your child became "disabled," or only to the time you applied? i've heard both.

They said its backdated to the date you applied.

Ours only took about 6 weeks start to finish. My dd2 has multiple problems but I think it was the gtube that sped the process along.

And yes, ours was retroactive so we got checks for the months I applied and for the month we were in.
