My nephew is 14 and reads at a kindergarten level. We'd love to get him a magazine subscription or some books but the stuff that's available at his reading level is obviously way too babyish. Any thoughts about something more age appropriate? I figured somebody on this forum might have BTDT. Thanks!

I don't know if this would be at his level or not, but we like the Ranger Rick magazine. It's all about nature and animals and has great photos. It's supposedly geared for age 7 and up, and so it might be a bit advanced for your nephew, but it's got adult-quality photos and content. The reading in some places is easier and in other places is a bit harder. Our 4 year old loves it, though some of the articles are a bit advanced for him. He liked looking at the photos, reading some of the content, and reading the cartoon. I read all of the articles myself and really enjoyed them

Comic books would be perfect for him. They're published monthly. They're interesting to boys his age. They involve a lot of reading.
Does he like Legos? They put out a free magazine for members of the Lego Club. Joining is free.
He might also like reading some of the Star Wars graphic novels that are produced for kids.

I would look at some graphic novels-there's really amazing work in that genre right now. It's an art form, and many seem geared toward young men. Often kids who have reading difficulties study pictures intensely for meaning, so wordless books, or well illustrated graphic novels like this may have something to offer.

Books like you're wanting are called hi-lo readers, or high interest/low reading level books, or just high interest books.

Can I ask what your goal is in this? If you've noticed that this child really enjoys looking at photos and magazines, then I think it might be a great gift, and would get something photo heavy that's aligned with his interests (e.g. does he like cartoons maybe something like Shonen Jump, if he's interested in travel then maybe National Geographic Traveler).
On the other hand, I think it's really common for kids with disabilities to receive a lot of gifts that are chosen in an effort to "fix" them in some way. Kids with disabilities deserve what other kids get at gift giving occasions, which is gifts chosen to make them happy.

I agree that you should get him something photo heavy in a topic that interests him. Don't get a comic that is word heavy, unless he wants it.
National Geographic, sports illustrated (possibly Jr.?), etc. May be nice choices.
Have you asked his parents what he wants? Does he have an Amazon wish list?
