16 adults and 10 kids - is 7lbs of pulled pork enough?

The title pretty much sums it up . . . We don't eat pork very often (I've never cooked it before) and dh is making pulled pork sandwiches for Superbowl. I bought a 7lb picnic cut. Is that enough? We have a lot of appetizers, but I don't want to not have enough of the main dish.

Nope.

Figure when you cook it that it'll shrink by about 30% (or more). And you want to allow at least 1/4 pound per person (and that's not very much, really - some adults will eat closer to a pound).

Crap. That's pretty much what I thought. I guess it's back to the grocery store again for more.

Yep, you need more, and remember company always eat more!

Nope! I would have about 2-3x that myself. Espcially for something like th SB which people often really pig out.

And, if it has a bone in it, that's a good chunk of your weight! We use a bone-in Boston butt for pulled pork.

I'd figure two adults per pound, and that might still be cutting it close because of shrinking and the weight of the bone.

Oh, goodness, not nearly enough! Figure 1lb. per adult and 1/2 lb. per child (uncooked weight, boneless... even more if bone-in). I'd actually have 4 or 5 times as much as you've bought. The last thing you want to happen is to run out and not everybody gets to eat. I'm the kind of hostess that would rather have several pounds left over than to not have enough, though.

wow, this sounds delicious! but definetly not enough. oh, the dreaded 2nd trip to the store!

We just did pulled pork and ended up with a 24lb boneless pork shoulder for 13 adults and 5 kids - we had some left overs but not much.

Last time I made it for 8 adults and 8 kids, I did 6 lbs. of pork. I serve mine with rolls (for people who can have them), rice (some people like to put it over rice, like me), and baked beans. Some people serve coleslaw with it as well. The more "sides" you have, the less of the main dish people will eat too.

The good thing about pulled pork is that it freezes really well (at least the recipe we use).

I now have 12.5lbs of pork. I don't want to buy anymore - not because of the cost, but because at this point we don't have enough room to cook it all! We have mini slider rolls, and a guest is bringing coleslaw. We have a ton of appetizers coming, plus fillers like pretzels, pistachios, cheese spread, chips and salsa, golfish, etc., so I'm hoping that people won't be too starving by the time the pulled pork comes out. Maybe if we just them all liquored up they won't notice that we've run out.

Oh, and I bought 4 frozen pizzas for the kids from Trader Joes. I know my kids won't eat pulled pork - they don't like anything with BBQ sauce - and I'm sure there are a few other kids who feel the same way.

Gaa! I wish the party hadn't gotten this big.

A sad tale...I made Boeuf Bourguinon for a party once and didn't get enough beef. It was all fine in the end, but I ended up not eating ANY and my husband only got a couple bites of a fantastic dish that I had spent HOURS on.

Sooo...I'm glad you got more because I was going to agree with veryone else about needing more. I made pulled pork the other week and was sad about how I started with a 2lb roast and ended up with closer to 1lb of pulled pork. It was yummy though!! See how it goes...you and your hubby may not get your fill of pulled pork if it's a big hit, but I think that you'll have a decent amount now!
