Bison meat? Good grass-fed option?

Bison! Why didn't I think about this before! LOL I'm trying really hard to find high-quality, affordable sources of meat for my family, until such time as we really are in a position to do half a cow or join the meat CSA I'd like to join.

Anyway, I ran across something that clued me in that Trader Joe's sells bison burgers (I think in their frozen section?) Bison would have to be grass-fed, right? Does anyone know about the quality of TJ's bison burgers? I googled but didn't hit upon any particular info.

While I'm asking, short of making a friend who hunts and would share venison (don't have anyone in mind, just saying ) are there any other kinds of meat other than chicken, beef, pork, lamb, and bison that are good and that might be reasonable in cost and somewhat easily available?

Thanks!

Bison is what I would get when I couldn't get ground beef from my farmer's market. In our area, it costs about the same as grass-fed ground beef -- $5 a pound.

I emailed the company that sells ours and asked, and they said that the bison spend most of their life on grass, then are finished on grain.

We live in FL, so obviously getting bison from North Dakota or wherever isn't even close to local, but it works for now...we're moving, and bison seems to be the best compromise while we're in transition, but I imagine that I will buy it for hamburgers in the future, too, since DH seems to really love it. I am eager to find a local, organic/biodynamic, 100% grass fed meat.

For us, bison is cheaper than local meat, and I can purchase it at the Commissary on the military base. So I guess what I'm saying is that for me, it doesn't seem as ideal as from the farmer's market meat, but given budget and locational constraint, it seems like a really great thing!

I get bison a lot and my the butcher at the farmer's market said that there are regulations that all bison have to be raised on pasture not factory farmed. But I don't know how true that is. I just hope so because I have eaten lots of bison in these past years.
