I think DD will be ready for toilet training soon. I've introduced her to the toilet, flushing and she knows the difference between poop and pee. I've been hesitant to start because I don't want to rush her and I wasn't sure if I was ready. LOL. Anyway, lately she's been walking away so I can't see her when she has to poop. When she's done she comes to me and taps her pamper with her finger. After our upcoming short trip I want to try toilet training her. My mother suggested I buy another toilet seat that can fit her size and train her using the regular toilet. I've read a few toilet training books and it never mentioned using a smaller seat until they are trained already. Has anyone toilet trained without using the traditional "potty" seat. I would love your thoughts or some direction in where to go with this. TIA.

We've been letting Lina potty on either an seat reducer or her little potty as convenient. The big difference is how soon the LO will be able to sit alone. With a little potty, an older child could probably be potty-independent much sooner than with a big toilet.
For traveling, I'm in the process of ordering a foldable seat reducer for the diaper bag right now.
Target has ones with Dora or Elmo or something, but I want a plain one.
We also have a second potty in the car for when it's a nuisance to find a bathroom. With older kids, lots of people like the Potette portable potty that can be used with a plastic bag.

Thanks Sapphire Chan. Toilet training makes me nervous. I actually think DD will be fine. LOL I thought she was ready last year because she was always taking her diaper off when it was wet or number 2 but since she wasn't walking yet I didn't think she was ready.
The night before last she took off her pj's and her pamper off and relieved herself on two different spots in her crib. I'm so nervous about doing something wrong and scarring her for life. LOL
I'll try the seat reducer. We've owned a traditional potty for months and I want to get a reward chart or something to help make her feel good when she's gone on her own. Thanks for the tips. I'll post back and say how it goes but we won't be starting until after the 15th of Feb.

DS (now 3) never used the small potty or the seat on the large potty. He would have nothing to do with either one of them. It was just his personality though, he wanted to do what the adults do. Even at school where they have 4 small toilets and one full size one he waits for the big one. You won't scar here, you will know if she is ready or not. Good luck!

Actually, go ahead and do that now, since there are some great hints on helping out LOs who can't quite manage to do all the steps of using the toilet alone. It's utter BS that kids can only use the potty when they can do it all alone.

I actually like using a smaller potty because then DD2 could go in and sit on it herself. With the big potty, I had to put the insert in, push the stool up to it, all while she is dancing around everywhere yelling she had to go. We didn't use either with DD1 but she is half monkey and could climb up to the regular potty and sit without a insert or stool.

I bought a toliet seat with a potty seat built in kinda like this
But I got ours at target fro like $17. That way the potty seat is always on the toilet you don't have to stick it in.
(but in full disclosure we haven't actually put it on yet, so I can't really speak to how well it works
: but they have one at ds' preschool)

We only ever used the seat topper on the regular toilet. We had actually bought one of those tiny potty things but DD would have nothing to do with it. She started with the seat around 18 months and is really tiny, so it's fine.

Her other little potty is so small. It sits outside the bathroom door for emergencies. We're a one bathroom household. I also bought a small one for the car and we have needed it a handful of times.
I also wanted to recommend blowing bubbles as a celebration for success. My dd loved blowing bubbles afterward. It also helped her sit longer when she was going poo.
