where do we go from here?

Ds, two next week, is super interested in going pee-pee on the potty. He does it throughout the day whenever we ask him if he wants to or brings it up himself. He wears a diaper alll the time, but when he does go without a diaper for any length of time, he pee-pees on the floor and thinks it is so "funny!" He still hasn't pooed on the potty. So, my question is, what's the next step? Training pants? Continue with dipes? I realy have no idea. Perhpas I need to read a book the subject? Suggestions?

Diaper free time with a bunch of rags and a spritzer bottle of vinegar?

Since he's happy going to the potty to try, are you being sure to check with him every hour or so?

And training pants or undies could be good, being able to pull them down could add some more fun to the process. Also stickers in the potty or something.

When DS started showing interest in the potty and was staying dry in his diaper we got rid of them all together and bought a bunch of training pants. It worked really well. We had our share of pee accidents in the beginning but that only lasted a week or so and then dwindled down. He still poops in his underwear but doesn't have any pee accidents.

You could definitely try training pants or putting him on the potty regularly to get him there before he pees on the floor but IMO and IME toilet training before the child is able to recognize and verbalize the feeling of having to go before they actually do, is futile. However, I do think that giving them that naked time shows them what happens when they pee or poo so it may help with recognizing what it feels like just before they have to go.

Our DS went through the 'This free-peeing is fun' stage at about a year. It takes perhaps a few weeks. I suppose that it is pretty fun for them to see what happens! DS thought it was hilarious. So, we just mopped up the mess and put him in underwear. He caught on pretty quickly.

Thanks for the encouragement and advice! Things are going well...
DS is having fun peeing in the potty and is telling us when he needs to go. He even hopped on it in the midst of playing ball today!
I think we'll get some training pants this week and see how that goes, too. We're prepared for some accidents (and have already had a couple) but know that the interest is there. Don't think it's "futile" at all...

You could try training pants but my kids always treated them like a diaper in the beginning. I agree with naked time and lots of towels, ask him if he has to potty every so often. Dont make a big deal out of accidents but praise for a job well done. I always give my kids a big smile when they go on the potty to which they get a big smile on there face too.
My DD is training now and it started out just like DS, they started asking to have there diaper taken off saying pee (by ask they were yanking on there diaper lol) So we went with it and had some accidents but she has been diaper free for 6 wks and wears a diaper for nap (its usually dry when she wakes) and bedtime, the bedtime diaper is wet but nothing like it used to be. She will make me take her in the night sometimes too, I dont really like that part lol.
Good luck its a exciting time.

Is this a common sign to start training. My 18mo is now doing this. especially when he poops. And he says po his version of potty. Should I do anything with this or is he to young?

OP no advice, just thanks for the Q - its a good one.

All three on mine started between 18 months and close to 2. The first two were day and night trained by the time they were 2. So for me yes it was a good sign, but I cant say for everyone. DD is 19 months and as long as she is naked she has usually no accidents. My DS did this same thing and was trained in a couple months. That seems like a long time but I didnt push him and tried to discourage him cause I was due with DD when he was 21m.
Sooo since im righting a novel I will quit there lol but yes it could be a sign he is ready.
