Dumb gluten-free question

I've decided to go gluten-free, but I don't know what I'm doing beyond avoiding wheat, rye, barley, and oats.

I noticed that these cashews I buy say the following:

"Packed in a facility that processes peanuts, nuts, milk products, soy protein, wheat, eggs, and sesame seeds."

Does that mean a gluten-free person shouldn't eat these cashews?

What else do I need to avoid?

Depends on your sensitivity level to gluten. DD is gluten intolerant but is fine with stuff that is processed in a plant that also processes wheat or other gluten stuff. Some folks are much more sensitive and only eat stuff from places that are totally gluten-free.

If you are doing an initial elimination diet, I would avoid it. Try it again in several weeks, when all of the gluten is out of your system and you can tell if you are reacting to trace amounts. FWIW, my dd can tolerate cross contamination w/gluten (but not dairy - her reaction is much more serious to dairy). I did completely avoid any possible cc for several months.

Any other foods one should avoid when going gluten-free?

I agree, I was REALLY strict when I first went gluten-free, and then was able to determine that potential cross-contamination issues weren't a problem.

If you're going to do this accurately, you need need to read EVERY label and be aware of EVERY possible ingredient that gluten could be hiding in (there are lists out there you can take with you to the store, because believe me you won't memorize it all right away). Later on, if you decide you are reaping some kind of benefit by being gf, then you can play around a little more with your tolerance level. Good luck!
