Eek! Bad breath. Help!

Thread Starter
So, my husband has told me for a years that I have bad breath, but I've always chalked it up to what I'd eaten recently, not having brushed my teeth recently, etc. But, I think it's really a problem. I try to have good brushing habits, and even got a sonicare toothbrush for Christmas, which I've been using along with trying to floss regularly.

What do I do? I also tend to have some armpit odor, too, (sorry, tmi!) so I wonder if there's something off in my system, not just my mouth. Any ideas? Thanks!

I have a family member who had chronic (strong!!) bad breath. Daily. Even after a couple of hours of brushing teeth and mouthwash. A dentist said it was from the white coating on the back of the tongue and every time he talks/exhales it carries out the odor. Now this person tongue scrapes daily or every other day and I don't smell the odor anymore! You can use a commercial tongue scraper that they sell by the toothbrushes or a spoon. I clean my tongue also, although not as often--it does make you want to gag if you are not gentle enough. If you do see a white coating, you should be able to remove it onto your scraper/spoon though. Another thing, this person has a really long tongue and I suspect issues with dairy if that means anything.

Or another thing, it might be a decaying tooth?

Hope that helps some. Good luck!

Like PP suggested- tongue bacteria (way up on the back of it), a tooth issue, or tonsil stones. Don't read about tonsil stones if you have a weak stomach though.

I heard of a lady that had life long chronically awful breath that she was so embarrassed about- because she had great hygeine and it was discovered that her tonsils were very rocky and had pits in the that would trap food and it basically rots.

There are a number of ways to check for this and get rid of them without a doctor or spending any money. Look it up and see if that might be something you're dealing with.

I have a family member that has this issue too. And doesn't do much about it- sometimes likes to just say that it isn't an issue. (But it IS).
I bet they have tried the scraping, but probably not long enough to see a result and it is easier to jsut ignore it.

Anyone know, shouldn't a dentist be able to detect if their patient needs to do more tongue scraping or have the probelm with tongue stones (that sounds nasty)? Or is it something the person needs to tell the dentist they have a problem with??

OP- I hope you find something (easy) that helps you out.

In our case I think that previously dentists didn't mention the tongue scraping because they would rather suggest more teeth treatments, special mouthwash or more visits to tell you the truth. All the previous dentists and visits it was never mentioned. Now he takes care of it himself with a spoon for free!

try taking zinc. i don't know why, but zinc fights off bad breath and also body odor i believe. you could take suppliments, or eat foods that are loaded in zinc, like raw pumpkin seeds.

I don't really have any magical antidotes. But I will say, "Trust your gut feeling". If you feel there is something wrong in your body-system that is triggering bad breath and body odor, look into it. I have fought for ages with some righteous body stank... After putting a lot of stuff together over the last couple of years I am now attributing that to toxicity and nutrient deficiency, along with a whole score of other things that are less than fabulous about my health. You've gotta piece it all together. I.E. I have smelly breath. Why? I have chronic nasty bacteria on the back of my tongue. Why? Because my internal flora and fauna are disrupted. Why? Because my diet is bad. What makes my diet bad? I am eating too much... Or I am allergic to... I'm not eating enough... Why does that mess me up? Because there is too much yeast in my gut... I am not digesting my food properly... I have another issue that is causing imbalance paired with poor diet.

You could be experiencing some other symptoms that you haven't tied into the breath issue. Putting body odor with it is a start. Tally it all up. Generally, everything that is wrong with a person is being caused by a root cause that branches off and affects the whole body. Diet and environment are huge culprits. When you have a list of symptoms, start digging. Compare that to other lists. Find what fits you, and go from there. I really don't want to make a hypochondriac of everybody, I just know from experience that there is rarely a quick fix to a problem, especially a chronic one. Good luck on figuring out how to feel better.

Also, do you by chance have any sinus issues? Sinus problems can cause horrendous breath even if you aren't aware of an infection.

My mom always had the worst bad breath from what I remember as a kid and growing up with her. And then not too long ago I noticed when I got really close to her that wow her breath doesn't stink anymore and I asked her why, what did she do? She said that it must have been from her root canal tooth that she had extracted. That spot was infected and producing bad-smelling bacteria for all those years. I agree with her that it must have been the culprit.

Rinsing with hydrogen peroxide mixed in water also kills bacteria.
