Yoga or Chiro for some alignment issues I get when pregnant

This is my 3rd pregnancy. My first (11 yrs ago) I ended up in phys therapy for some nasty left hip pain. It was not SI joint related, was only left side, felt best when active, and really hurt most when sitting. Went away very quickly post pregnancy. The PT and massage did not help. 9 yrs later in pregnancy #2 I got the same thing, worse and earlier. Different PT, she really couldn't diagnosis either and I just rode it out. At 34 weeks baby was breech so I saw a chiro 3x week for the remainder of the pregnancy. This did nothing for my hip pain, but I never really brought it up, as my main concern was getting baby turned. This time (2 yrs later) I am 24 weeks and the pain is way worse than the other two.

It is catch 22 for me, because the only thing that gives me relief is being active. I am still running 3 miles a few times/week, weight training 4-5x week and doing a prenatal water class. I taper back when needed, but really, on the off time is when my hip stiffens up and really gets bad.

After a few PTs and opinions, the not so detailed consensus amongst professionals is that it is a combo of loosening of joints with some left side alignment issues. I kind of know I am lopsided (for lack of a better term) from an internal glute injury I had back in my power lifting days. I am always a little muscularly imbalanced. It never really bothers me when not pregnant. But then those joints loosen, I am now also hipping a toddler on that left side, and it is becoming horrible.

I would like to do something to help with the alignment issues for the remainder of the pregnancy. I am wondering if yoga or a chiro would be most helpful? My experience with both of these is as follows: I did an 8 week yoga workshop 7 years ago, and none since. I have seen chiros off and on for various things, and have never ever felt like it was worth the time or money.

My insurance sticks me with a $50 copay for each chiro visit. My gym offers a slew of yoga classes, with instructors that are amazing and can probably modify pretty well for pregnancy. These are free to me. There is one prenatal yoga class nearby, but would require me get a sitter 1x/week ($20) and it's $12/class, so $32 per session. I have yoga DVDs for pregnancy, but I do not know enough about yoga to get the real benefits from a structural standpoint. If I go the yoga route, I would be more prone to maybe pay like $150 for 3 private sessions with the instructor and get a few things to help at home.

I am open to both, but am not up for shelling out a ton of money.

Are there any opinoins of what the best one of these two, or combo, may be for some alignment pain issues?

Thanks!

My vote is for yoga. From what I have seen from others doing chiro for various reasons is that it helps them but only temporarily, and they are usually focused on what is bothering you at that time.

IMO, yoga is a total body experience. You may have problem areas but that doesn't necessarily mean those are the areas that needed focused on. For example, lower back pain is often caused by tight muscles in the back of your legs and glutes. With yoga, you workout everything.

I would try the free yoga at your gym first, and see if that satisfies you. I am still doing power vinyasa yoga and the only modification right now is no twists...and I don't push myself as hard as I did before and take more breaks. As my belly gets bigger there may be more mods though.

i would definitely consider yoga first, especially if cost is an issue. i personally like to take control of my health and physical condition, rather than leaving it to a "professional" to fix, if you know what i mean. however, you may need both to be functioning at your optimum level. if you were fairly active/athletic before your pregnancy, you may find prenatal yoga very slow moving and not challenging enough... that is how i felt anyway. i practice bikram yoga a couple times a week and love it. it keeps my body running like a well-oiled machine. you may have to try out a few different classes before you find something that is at the right intensity level for you. i also find that people are much more affected by the flow and the teacher and the overall philosophy of the kind of class they go to than for other kinds of fitness. i think there is a perfect kind of yoga for everyone, you just have to keep trying new styles until you find one that works.

oh yeah, modifications shouldn't be too hard. honestly, your body WILL tell you which poses are no good if you listen to it! anything that compresses or twists your abdomen too much is out, and you'll probably need to support yourself more when coming out of certain postures. however, everyone does carry differently... i was able to keep doing regular postures for quite a long time because i carried very small and didn't have any discomfort.

Thanks guys!

I actually scored a great deal. I ended up email the lady that teaches the prenatal yoga class (the one that does not work with my schedule) to ask if she would do a few private sessions to get me going until my schedule changed. Turns out it was a lady I interviewed as a part time nanny for DD2 prior to deciding to leave my job. They charge $8-10 for an hour class at the studio, and she offered to do private hour sessions for $10-15/hr!! So very kind, but I think I would not feel right paying her less than like $20-25/hr. Either way, it is a great deal for me, less than I expected, she specializes in prenatal, AND she is a week behind me with her 3rd child! So I am meeting her at 2pm today for session #1. I am really excited.
