secular daily character building books?

When I grew up my mom used to read my brother and me a book everyday called Keys for Kids. It was a daily Christian character building book for kids/ devotions. However, I am looking for a secular equivalent. Does anyone know of any or have some recommendations for things I can to for character building activities? It seems like the only ones I can find are all religious based.

I would like to find one, too. I've been using this as a guide without the biblical parts, but there are some good NA stories linked on there and I found some American Virtues (?) books-one was about Ben Franklin sharing as a kid, etc. If I remember the name of the series, I'll post it.

I find that many of the books we read contain this type of content anyway. For example, I just read my daughter Beverly Cleary's "Ramona the Pest" over the weekend, which contained quite a bit of food for thought.

My inclination is to teach character by example, through literature, and through dinner-table discussion. This method worked well for my parents.

ValueTales? Most of them seem to be by Spencer or Ann Johnson.

I remember enjoying them as a kid, and recently found them again at our library. I plan to start using some of them soon.

As a kid, I liked the "Let's Talk About . . ." series of books. I knew they were about teaching me to clean up my room or be nice to my brother or whatever, but they were pretty fun to read and I liked the little sub-characters (like a pet or something, a frog or whatever, that would be on every page, usually doing something slightly comical).

ETA: Here they are (updated since I was a kid, of course): http://joyberrybooks.com/p.cfm?s=2&p=408

We were given these recently. I find them awfully preachy, but for some reason my kids love them! I think it may actually be helpful to have it explained to them possible reasons why they act like they do and alternative behaviors.

(And my DD thinks that the square shape makes them excellent as building blocks, too...)
