any other words for "potty" :)

Hello,
I am pregnant with my first baby and plan to try to do EC from the start.
DH and I are talking about trying to find a word to refer to the toilet other than "potty". We just don't like that word!
I don't really like "toilet" that much.
What are some more dignified ways of talking about a "potty" and teaching our little one what to call it? I am sure we will be using the word a lot as we EC our baby, and we want a word we like!

We were brainstorming- Loo? Isn't that one? Any other better ones?

Bathroom? Facilities?

The thing with "potty" is that it's phonetically easy for little mouths.

You may want to use the ASL sign for toilet: signing the letter T and shaking your first. But a word to associate with it other than potty or toilet, I'm not sure.

Lavatory? My husband is partial to Toity but I think that's going in the wrong direction for you. You could try a multicultural tactic and use a translation in a different language. But my favorite is Privy. Sailor speak is the Head. And there's also water closet.Others: pot, john, throne

I was trying to remember how my family referred to it when I was a child. I think we just said bathroom. Isn't potty kind of a word of this generation? Somehow it irritates me so much!

My first choice would be whatever word you guys already use. You definitely will be using the word a lot! You may find that once you have your baby something like the word potty may not irritate you as much as it does now. Or maybe it still will! In the beginning we used various receptacles (the sink, various potty bowls, and the toilet on rare occasion, as well as peeing outside on the grass) so it was nice to have a more generic word. To me, the toilet is the actual toilet, and I wouldn't use that word when pottying my girl in the car, for example. I use potty, and we used potty growing up. (I'm 41, so it's been around at least awhile!) I remember when I was six or so, we were on a trip and my mom wrote me a note (I guess I was in back in our cab-over camper and there was a window between the camper and the front) and she asked me if I needed to go "poddy" and I remember thinking that she spelled it wrong! Congratulations on your little one and enjoy the ECing!

I did a thesaurus search and came up with a list

W.C., can*, comfort station, commode, garderobe, gentlemen's room, head, john, ladies' room, latrine, lavatory, little boy's room, little girl's room, men's room, outhouse, potty, powder room, privy, restroom, throne, washroom, water closet, women's room!

I doubt that most of them sound any better than Potty, and you also have to remember that the word you pick should be easy for your little one to say!

I hope this helps!

We use the asl sign for toilet.
We use potty when refering to her littly potty.
We use toilet when refering to the actual toilet.
We use bathroom when referring to the place that either of those are kept.
When asking if she needs to go we refer to what she needs to do not where she needs to go. "do you need to go peepee" or "do you need to go poo poo"

Man, I'm not going to be much help here...these days I have trouble referring it to anything other than "The Potty" even when I am hanging out with adults and no children are in sight

I agree with the poster who said that "potty" is an easy one for little kids to learn to say, but go with what feels comfortable to you. I would recommend using a word that lots of people will recognize though--If you teach your kid to ask for the "head" when she needs to pee (just to pick one of the suggested words above), she may have trouble if others are watching her and have no idea what she means!

I just say "do you want to go to the bathroom?" and use the ASL sign for potty / bathroom. He does use the toilet in the bathroom, so that seems appropriate. (I wish I could entice him to use the potty, but he's never really been interested in that.)

We do exactly this, only we never ask "do you" unless giving her the option of using her potty or the toilet.

We don't technically "ask" either. It is like "do you need to pee" as I am taking her and setting her on the potty.

We used Loo for the actual bathroom and Po for the actual little potty.
