my little guy is 5 1/2 months and i've been wearing on my back in the Ergo. He loves it and it's so much easier to do things like laundry and dishes. Seems like as long as he has really good head control.... but I'm no expert.

I waited until six weeks. For the really little ones you can swaddle the baby and then put them on your back with a MT.

Well, it depends. The common recommendation is around 6 months. This is because they have good head and torso control at that age, so it becomes very easy to put them on your back.

On the other hand, lots of cultures wear newborns on their backs. It is very possible to do, but requires some knowledge and techniques to do safely. Because we're not used to that in western europe/north america, people think it isn't safe.

So. If your daughter has good torso and head control, absolutely you can wear her on your back at this stage. If she doesn't, but you are brave and careful ( ) you can wear her on your back anyway. At this age I bet she'd love a high back carry. Tie your babyhawk waist straps above your breasts, have someone put her against your back, pull it up and over her back, bring the straps over your shoulders, under your arms, and tie them behind her back.

If you don't have someone helping, this is much trickier, of course.

From birth in a wrap if you are brave enough! hehe

Personally I would probably feel more comfortable attempting a back carry from about 2 months onwards - they are a bit more 'solid' then iykwim.

Though for fun, I will try a newborn on my back! - With a spotter of course and on our super sized soft bed!...Should be interesting but seriously, if I can master that - then it would be fab!

I have been on TBW and you should see the newborns in wraps on backs - it just looks sooooooo loverly!

I've worn my kids from about 2 wks old. In a FH and Kozy in a back carry. Especially #4, it was a total life saver.

I have a friend who wore her latest baby on her back the day he was born, I believe! But she is a BWing expert, literarlly-- runs the local teaching group. I didn't get DD up on my back until at least 9mo, but I was a super wuss about it. It took a few months to feel confident about it

If you've got the Beco Butterfly, you can definitely do a safe back carry now. I got dd on my back at 3 months in the Beco. Just practice over a bed, in front of a mirror -- once you get the hands crossing motion down (like putting on a backpack) it will be easy!

Can anyone recommend some good YouTube tutorials for a back carry with a wrap or a MT?

The Beco does make back carries really easy.

jess, the sling station has great instructional videos

I love the wrap (I like the rucksack carry for quick back carries) and the MT for back carries.
