really really really really bad gas!

We are the proud owners of a wonderful rambunctious hilarious 120lb + black lab named Leo. For some reason he has had TERRIBLE gas this winter. It really can make you gag (especially now that I am pregnant!) He has not had a change in food or exercise or anything. It's just BAD. No signs of being sick or anything, he is his usual happy self, eating and sleeping just fine, no accidents or anything. Anything we can give him to treat the gas or any reason he would spontaneously develop this nasty gas spontaneously over the last 2 months?

The same thing happened to our pup. We tried a few different foods to see if they helped, but they either didn't help or made it worse. Now we make her food. Ground Beef (cooked,) carrots, brown rice, and some other stuff (DH makes it...so I'm not sure what all he puts in it.) Since we started doing this her gas has mostly gone away. If the kids sneak her some food from their plates she sometimes gets a little gassy, but otherwise she is much better, plus she started putting back on some much needed weight.

Is he getting table scraps or new treats? Those could cause gas. Its also not uncommon for manufacturers to alter their foods ingredients without telling anyone, which could also account for his gas. What food are you feeding? switching to a higher quality food, or a different brand might help. My own dog gets probiotics, which could help. I notice though that if I give her too much she gets gassy. So I measure it out carefully.

Yes! It happens more frequently than people realize. Manufacturers have several months to update ingredient listings on the bag when the food content changes. Plus when they are substituting and ingredient for the same one from a different source it may be different or processed differently.

maybe they did switch the ingredients on us. We will check it out. We have tried higher quality food before but it always gives him the runs really bad, even with gradual introduction. Any idea where we can get doggie probiotics?

Try cutting out the corn in his food. That made my dogs stink to high heaven. Most dry foods have some corn in them, so it's hard to find one that doesn't.

We feed Nutro Lamb and Brown Rice to our big dogs, and Newmans Own to our frenchie since the Nutro makes him pukey. They all get the Newmans own brown rice, chicken and vegetable wet food as well.

For treats, we do carrot chunks, potato chunks, or boiled chicken. We also give milk bones but those are the small ones and don't effect them.

It wouldn't hurt to deworm him, too.

Maybe yogurt would help? I had a dog with digestion and skin issues, and I couldn't afford the absolute best dog food, and didn't have enough time to do a raw diet. So I added about 1/2 cup of plain (organic, lowfat -so I could eat it, too!) yogurt to his meal every day, fairly inexpensive, non-time consuming, seemed to work well. YMMV.

Fromm makes really high quality dog food that includes probiotics.
