One month old curious babe in a sling...

Now I bought two Maya wraps thinking my little one (this was back actually, when I was pregnant with Josie) would like to be wrapped up like a bug in a rug for like...months. Seems I was wrong.

Bella doesn't like having her legs tucked into the carrier at all anymore! She likes to stretch out and will only sit in there usually if her legs are dangling out of the bottom! Also, she has to have her head out of the top of the wrap as well, looking around. Basically she's one of those babies who would actually prefer to be a toddler already...lol. She can hold her head up really very strongly, and move it about and follow people around with her eyes - all sorts. Basically my timeline has been gazumped.

Now this isn't a bad thing, but, she does love to be carried and be part of everything. I was thinking perhaps a Moby wrap style thing would be a bit more supportive and comfortable if this is the way she wants to sit? What are your experiences with these style carriers?

Additionally, being freelance and working from home, I've had to stop working for a bit - firstly to prepare for babe, then these last four weeks, to finally have my babymoon and work around her, you know? So I am FLAT broke! The Moby wrap is, while not expensive, beyond my budget - until I get back to work I am completely reliant on DP (which is alien to me and I have to admit I don't really like it...lol)! BUT I have some material and a sewing machine. I am figuring if I can get a hold of some kind of pattern for a Moby, and what kind of material to make it out of, I could make my own?

So my questions are as follows:

What did you think of the Moby? They LOOK super comfy...
What's the Moby made of?
Could I make a Moby style thing - if so, do you know of a decent pattern?

Thank you so much in advance!

I LOVE my Moby, my DD was the same kind of baby, and my DS is one who like to be held. I bought the Moby so I could carry him around while dealing with my very active 3 year old. They are made of jersey and are a stretchy wrap. I looked up homemade baby wraps and found a site where women have all kinds of home made slings, wraps, etc....

Though the price is $38 or so, IDK where I live if I could find nice thick jersey like that to make one, for me it was cheaper to buy. Plus my mom bought it for me

I now would like a woven wrap, I really enjoy the wrap style carrier.

You don't need a pattern or a sewing machine to make a Moby-style wrap: just pick up 5-7 yards of stretchy material (like a t-shirt knit) in one length some where, and cut it to, say, 20-30 inches wide, depending on your preference. You can taper the ends, but you don't have to. A knit like this won't fray, so you don't need to finish the edges.

If you can find a knit on the clearance table, the whole thing should cost you less than ten bucks, and since you're cutting the fabric lengthwise, you'll have enough for two (or three, if your fabric is 60 inches wide) wraps!

I love my Moby. I think it is a jersey material. If you can find a nice, semi-stretchy material you could make it yourself, like you want.

There are tons of great videos on YouTube that I watched to learn how to use it. I've mastered one of the wrap styles and now I'm ready to try another!

Here's a tutorial for making a wrap.

I actually found a different one when I made ours, but I can't seem to find it online at the moment. It is really easy! You really only need the fabric and scissors!

I recommend checking out

http://www.thebabywearer.com/

you will need to join to use the forum, but they have a lot of great info. also a chat for making your own as well as a for sale or trade chat were you can find wraps and carriers.

I love my wrap and so does my curious 4 month old son. He smiles when he sees me put it on

Will add though that DS2 was like you described -- refused to tuck his feet in anywhere -- and though I tried my Moby (which I'd used almost exclusively with DS1 from 6 weeks or so on) we ended up sticking with the Maya, just with his legs hanging out the bottom. The main issue with the Moby was that he wanted to nurse very, very frequently, and I found it hard to give him access to my breasts without messing up the wrap and retying every 1/2 hour got annoying very quickly. I found that after a couple of weeks carrying him upright in the Moby it began to feel very secure.
