Ultrasound on toddler's kidney's..experiences?

My DS 21 months is recovering from his 1st bladder infection - confirmed by 2 separate cultures...I'm assuming it was e.coli, but forgot to ask
No natural remedies helped kick it.

So the Ped said it was unusual and wants to do an ultrasound to make sure everything is working as it should. He is intact.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has gone through this and if you could share what we can expect through the procedure and maybe what your results were?

Thank you

Renal Ultrasound

DD1 has had this done numerous times. It's like a pregnancy ultrasound. They put jelly on the lower abdomen and Scan it with the hand held thing the Tech has. Then they do the lower back.

No biggie. Just takes a few minutes.

You can watch the monitor. I think it's cool to see.

Was there any fasting for this?
We haven't got our instructions yet, so thought I'd ask.
If you don't mind my asking, did everything show up okay for your child Kat?

DS gets really upset when strangers come in to his personal space, so I'm not sure how to make this easy for him. Having a woman tech will help for sure, but I have a feeling he's going to cry no matter what

My dd did not need to fast or anything. She did cry because the environment just freaks her out. They were used to seeing this, and gave her a few stuffed animals. It was quick, and I agree, It is pretty cool to watch.

No fasting, no anethesia. Procedure is pretty darn quick. Well as long as your little can lay still.

Will you be having this done at a Children's Hospital? If you are tell them you would like a Child Life Specialist for help. That your child may have some problems letting them do this. Some of the hospitals have kid shows or movies on. Some have projectors that put stars on the ceiling. They have toys to keep your child occupied.

Well my daughter has Lipomyelomeningocele, Tethered Spinal Cord, Neurogenic Bladder and Neurogenic Bowel. She has had numerous MRI's, Renal Ultrasounds, x-rays, VCUG, Urodynamic Studies, Surgeries etc... These are life long issues.

DD had the u/s and it was easy. Nothing special just the jelly and the wand and dd turning one way then another. It was over quick and the guy that did it was very good with her.

Hopefully they will warm the jelly up. Otherwise it may be a littl cool.

Thank you everyone

Kat - I'm sorry, that's a lot going on, I hope she is doing okay.

I hope everyone else's little ones are doing okay too

I agree with pp's that it's not a bad test. DD has needed a number of them (for kidney reflux) and she was actually disappointed at our last appt when she didn't have to have one. She kept asking when they were going tickle her belly!

I have a friend whose dd has some anxiety issues and needed to have an u/s. I think they used roll-on deoderant to "practice" doing the u/s. She said it helped b/c it gave her an idea of what to expect, and it also helped her to realize it would be kind of wet and sticky.

Good luck with the ultrasound!
