We have a king size family bed. when ds was first born, I did keep him away from the others, he slep next to the wall, then me, then dd, then dh on the other side. After he got out of the newborn stage and had some body control, around 5 months, he moved into the center, so I was against the wall, the ds, dd, then dh. That's the way we've slept ever since. We don't have a "bedtime," people go to bed when they're tired. I'm usually the last one up at this point, dh goes to bed usually first, then dd, then ds will toddle in, and finally I'll go in last after my work is done.
I refuse to have some elaborate nighttime ritual that steals my time in order for my kids to go to sleep. I will take 5 minutes and hold ds and pat his back though, when he's ready to sleep, he likes that. When we were BFing, I nursed through the night..ds was right there next to me. We actually weaned just before he was 2 though, so no more nursing here. (the kids are 5.5 and just over 2). In a year or so, we think we'll probably move them into a bed together, we'll see. As far as making it safe, our bed is a tempurpedic foam mattress on the floor..literally 8 inches tall, lol, so falling "off" isn't a big deal.
