Help with the length of the day!

Hi there. My girls will be entering kindergarten in the fall. We have applied to two local Montessori schools. The kindergarten day is 8 to 3 in one of the schools and 8:30 to 3 in another.

It just struck me how long a day that is, especially for Kindergarten age kids. In the morning, we'll just be getting ready, eating breakfast and getting out the door. With how early they'll have to get up and all the energy kindy will take, I imagine they'll be going to bed at 7 or 8. That's really only 5 hours a day with my kids. And much of that will be spent making dinner, cleaning up, etc. Yikes! They've only ever been home with me, so I'm kind of freaking out!

How do you deal with the loss of time together? I'm pretty sad about it.

Oh I know!! I am currently having the same dilemma. My dd is currently attending preschool at a lovely Montessori school, and will be eligible for K in September. I am so conflicted because the K hours are 8:30-3:30!! I really want her to attend this school but I'm seriously considering hsing because of the long hours.

Our Montessori program has similar hours (well, 9-4); but then so does the other Kindergarten classes in the district. They only offer full-day here.

I think it seems like a long time, but it's not really for most kids. As long as there is some down/nap time, the kids seem to adapt after the first few weeks. With Montessori, a 3 hour work cycle is ideal (if not longer), so then if you add in a recess or two, lunch, PE, art, computer, etc., I really see the need for a longer day.

I agree that it is a long day. We feel that it is worth it for many reasons. And we pick her up at noon about once a month and have a nice long afternoon together, or head out of town. Any less time in the Montessori environment and it's almost not worth sending them there.
