Weight Watchers--February 2010

Hi,

I'd like to join in the WW group. Since there isn't a February thread I am starting it.

After my son's birth I was eventually down to 137 pounds. Then he started weaning himself but I didn't wean myself and put on 15 pounds. Where did those come from?

I would have put energy into losing the weight except we decided to adopt and I wanted to maintain my milk supply for the baby. She arrived in August '08 and is now 18 months old. (I tandem nursed both of them. She only had less than 2 ounces of formula before I met her at 6 hours. I did need to use a little bit of donor milk.) Then, with the stress of 2 kids my weight crept up a bit more. Okay, it was the stress of 2 kids and my recent addiction to almond butter and jelly sandwiches.

I am at a point where I feel I can lose weight without worrying about my milk supply. I joined WW about a month ago. Lost 3 pounds the first 3 weeks. Then I had a great week. Ate less points than any other week. And I only lost 0.2 pounds. Bummed about that. Plus my husband was out of town and we were staying with a friend so I didn't even count points for 3 days. Then I lost my tracker. And tonight's food was really yummy so I think I used weekly points, though I don't know if I have any left or not.

Anyway, Wed. is meeting day. We'll see where I'm at then.

BTW, I bought the WW Vegetarian Cookbook. There are some great recipes in it. Cauliflower soup is amazing. Broccoli sandwiches are superb. Tonight's zucchini and orzo was the first "bland" dish, except I liked it. It reminded me of my childhood. It tasted like rice a roni except it was healthy (I added bouillon to the recipe as it was going to be boring without it.)

I do have a question about exercise. When do you do it? I am SAHM to 1 and 4 year old. We don't have childcare. The baby hardly naps. I don't know when to squeeze in exercise. I have an old Richard Simmons tape I did forever--until my son was born. I even got a new RS dvd for Christmas and I haven't used it. Any thoughts on exercise with a toddler and 4 year old?

well, i just want to check in and say that my weigh-in was last saturday and i am down 1 pound for a total of 18. wooo hoo! as far as exercise, i try when she is asleep. also my dd loves watching exercise shows for some reason. i suppose it is because her television time is so limited at home. so the oldest may want to participate in that way. not too sure about the baby. hmmmmm...

Nice work BadMamaJama!
And, I hope your meeting was a grand success SundayC!

I am joining WW online for the first time this week! For the past couple years (pregnancy and nursing) I have been eating whatever I want and my weight has been creeping up slowly. It is so silly what motivated me, but my wakeup call was the fact that for the first time I weigh what DH does... He doesn't eat when stressed and I do, so we have met in the middle! I have about 15 lbs to lose to reach goal... Here goes!

DD (15m) is still nursing strong, and I want to do CLWing with her, so I am super conscious of my milk supply. I weigh on Sundays... I'll let you know how it goes

Alas I gained just a bit. Not surprised. The first 3 days I just ate. The next 4 I'd lost my tracker and was too lazy to just write it all down.

I now have my tracker and am following what I'm supposed to. I sometimes wonder if I appropriately score the little bites of kid food I eat each day. I cut back on my daily points to see if that would help make up for it. I figure my little "snacks" are probably consistent. Rather than cut back on those I took a point off each day. We'll see how it goes.

I may not get to weight in this week. My husband might have to travel for work and we'll all go with him. I'm not sure I'll have access to the rental car. He may need it so I'll be confined to where my feet can take us. Not worth it to try and find a meeting far from home under those circumstances.

Had a rough week this week. I'm fighting some depression and unfortunately eating helps numb some of the pain for me, so I was off program all week. I skipped weigh-in too. I'm feeling better now and am going to try and get back in the swing of things today.

Welcome SundayCrepes! Thanks for starting the new thread.

Chiming in again! I've been going on & off and mostly 'playing' at WW. As most of you have probably experienced, it's a great program when you work it. Especially important (at least for me) is the tracking everything I eat. I've returned with a new commitment following a dedicated elimination diet challenge. I've discovered a couple foods that I am sensitive to and since removing those from my diet, I am feeling better & more focused.

I've lost 8lbs in the month since I returned to the meetings (15 lbs since November) and in the last 2 weeks have lost 6 inches. I'm tracking everything, haven't gone over points since starting in January. I'm also exercising 5-7 days a week. I'm because I haven't seen any improvment at all on my home scale this week. I'm pretty sure this will resolve, but I'd rather just have constant downward progress. I have 100+ to lose and of course I want it to be gone..... yesterday!!

weigh in was saturday and i was down by .2 and i was thrilled. it was a rough week at the end. there was uncontrollable snacking on friday and a baby shower friday night, but i am glad it is over. i had a food hangover saturday morning and it served me right! i did not like the way that i felt and have to reference that feeling when i want to loose control. have a good week, y'all!

Yay! I stuck to it all week (week 1, for me) and was down 2.2 pounds at my weigh-in today!

I'm happy, but also thinking that for a nursing mom that's a bit quick... Now, when I recalculate my daily points at my new weight it says I get 3 less each day. Perhaps I should stay at the old points value to be sure to not lose my milk supply? It seems to be okay so far, though...

The newness is wearing off, but I know I need to keep on tracking. I love love LOVE to eat (just typing about eating make me want to go get a snack!) and can get out of control so quickly.

Hi! Congrats to all the losers! And I mean that in the greatest way possible.

I myself began WW in January and to date, have lost 6 lbs. I have 100 to lose, I would be happy losing 50... to get me back to where I was before I was pregnant. But I was overweight then, too.

I feel frustrated that it's taken so long to lose 6... I want it gone, yesterday, as someone said above. But I am glad to have company on the journey.

Do we share low food points ideas here? I would look forward to seeing those.

Hugs to all who have done so well, and let's keep up the good work!

Oh, and OP, when I want to exercise, I include my little ones, 2 and 4, and they either try to go along with the DVD, or they give up and sit on the couch and watch me. Not sure how entertaining that is, but at least they will do it. My 4 year old sometimes gets special "computer time" for mommy to work out. PBS kids has a great website with games. I don't know if you are okay with that, but it works for me!

The first week you use up your glycogen stores in your liver and the water that is with the glycogen. So, you may have just gotten rid of water weight. Next week you'll get a better sense of what your actual weight loss is. Also, you should have only gone down 1 point when you lost that weight. For example, if you went from 161 pounds to 159 you go from 16 weight points to 15 weight points.

I'm also nursing so am okay that this is going slower than when I can just lose weight MY way (lots of exercise, less food, and the weight just falls off.)

I'm trying to look at this as a new way to feed my family. We always ate fresh fruit with dinner and now I'm looking for ways to add yummy vegetables with dinner. I'm thinking about this being a life change rather than a diet.

The two things that help me most in this are my FIL died at 47 from a heart attack and my husband's older brother died at 58. I want my husband's cholesterol to be as low as possible. The second reason is I want my kids growing up with a really healthy diet.

Congrats to you mom0810! 6 lbs is quite an accomplisment!

I'm still figuring out low food point ideas... So I'll be interested to hear what others say too.

(I never thought I'd be happy to be called a "loser"!)

Hi SundayC! We must have posted at the same moment...

Thanks for the info and ideas- I do remember from past weight loss attemps other ways that it starts quick then tapers off. Glad to hear the reasons behind it!

I'm sorry to hear about your Dh family...

I totally agree with you about a new way and example for the family, but with my Dh it's getting complicated. Since DD was born he has just been dropping weight like crazy! DD is a high maintenance and ACTIVE girl and we are both stressed. I eat, he doesn't. So now I'm trying to lose weight while also helping him keep it on. Difficult!

Thanks, snuggly! It doesn't feel like a lot but then, I am so hard on myself and expect instant change.

Interesting about the first week's weight loss. In the past, on WW, I lost nearly 10 lbs the first week, so I felt disappointed by the 1.4 lbs I lost in the first week this time. I am also a nursing mom, and I seem to have a lot of trouble losing water weight for some reason. If I have extra salt, the fluid and swelling lasts for days. Weeks, even. So that has been hard, since I love salt so much!

Something I did was buy a lot of bags of frozen "stir fry" type veggies and saute them with either soy or sweet and sour sauce and put that over brown rice. Very filling, very easy, and really quite good. My Jewel carries one that is broccoli, carrots, and water chestnuts.

I have also started buying frozen chopped green peppers and onions. I saute those with some olive oil spray, and then eat them on a fat free tortilla with a dab of low fat sour cream. This morning I added 2 egg whites and had that with some low fat turkey sausage. It was quite good and very low points. Also you could add some spinach to that and it would be great.

INterestingly, I found that when I started WW, I was eating SO much more than I have been eating, even while gaining weight! How is that even possible??? I don't know. But it seemed like on WW I was always eating! I've gained 60 lbs while nursing, so hopefully this is going to turn it around. I am still nursing my 2 year old every night, and sometimes at nap.

Thanks for the good food ideas- Yum! I'll put some of those ingredients on my shopping list!

I don't have many good ideas to contribute as I get started figuring this out... Here's just a couple from this week: I have been using spinach quite a bit... I do some of our favorite curries, stews, or pasta sauces and then used steamed spinach instead of the rice or pasta... It saves a few points and I like the taste just as much! Also, it sounds strange, but we have this great company that makes organic, gourmet sauerkrauts in really unique flavors (seaweed, curry, etc.) They are 0 points and supper tangy and crunchy so I have been using those instead of the high calorie salad dressings and toppings that I usually love.

I got several weight watchers cookbooks--

http://www.amazon.com/Weight-Watcher...6192601&sr=8-1

http://www.amazon.com/Weight-Watcher...6192637&sr=1-1

http://www.amazon.com/Weight-Watcher...6192461&sr=8-1

The recipes are really good. When I told my husband we would be having broccoli sandwiches (vegetarian book) he made a face. Then when we were eating them, he kept saying how good they were.

And the cauliflower soup (make it in minutes book) is so good I've made it several times.

For breakfast I make a cheese omelet (1 egg, 1 egg white, 2T Parmesan) and 2 pieces of Milton's whole wheat toast. It's got 5 grams of fiber so is only one point per slice. I use only fruit jelly, just a thin layer, and don't count the fraction of a point. That's 4 points. If I have leftover veggies I put it in the omelet and it's no extra points. I splurge a point and drink half a cup of oj. It's a huge amount of food and I'm not hungry until lunchtime. Only 5 points for all that food.

When I get hungry and/or want a snack I eat microwave popcorn. The kind that's only 1 point a bag. I fear it has gmo so may switch to organic at some future point but right now the one point wins out.

Don't you hate that? I feel like I am totally putting my organic-is-best philosophy to the back burner because low-point wins out every time!!!

Actually, if I could just portion control, my guess is the organic popcorn at safeway has the same points per portion. It's that portion control thing that gets me into trouble. lol

Well, I went to my WW meeting last night & I've maintained my goal weight for 2 weeks in a row. I just have 4 more weeks to go until lifetime. My goal this week is to get in more exercise! 30 Day Shred-here I come!

I weighed in yesterday. I only lost 0.2 pounds.

The first 3 weeks I did fine. The next week I used less points on a daily basis and didn't use any of my 35 points and I only lost 0.2 pounds. I was so sure I was going to lose 1.5 pounds and I lost 0.2. So that week I was discouraged and gained weight. Then I got back on track and again thought I'd do well. Again only 0.2 pounds.

I know I nibble bites of my kids's stuff, but I take points for the nibbles. Something I didn't even do the first 3 weeks. I figure I'm probably consistent with how many kid points I'm taking so it should be the same as the first week, but somethings up.

I cut my points by 2. I should probably cut another 2 points out.

One of my big downfalls is almond butter and jelly sandwiches. I was eating several a week the first 3 weeks while I was losing weight. The next weeks I was just eating the crusts off my daughter's sandwiches and taking points for them. I'm now cutting the crust off her sandwiches so I won't eat them.

Feeling generally discouraged.

Though ending on the bright side, I'm stilling cooking the Weight Watchers way. I think it's healthier than how I was cooking before (really cheese heavy as I'm a vegetarian.) Alls not lost--including the weight. LOL
