How many layers of microfiber?

I bought some microfiber auto towels to use as inserts or for AIOs - how many layers do you typically use? I'm planning to cover it with some flannel or cotton so it's not next to my baby's skin.

i fold it in thirds and wrap a cloth around it

I fold in thirds, too! I sew it just on the short ends, though, so that when it is washed the water can get into the layers easily.
